Another superb team performance by the 2nds
Ely travelled to St Neots looking to follow on from their dogged performance against top of the table Renegades last week.
The match had extra importance as it was classed as a double header with the winning team taking double points due to the lost game during the bad weather.
Ely continued where they left off from last week and although faced by a physically superior team, showed why they were victors last weekend.
Yet again though it was the hosts that took the lead when a clearance kick fro, stand in captain Nev fell to kindly to a St Neots player who managed to off load in the tackle to their rather muscle bound 13 who decided to run through the Ely defence and score in the corner - The conversation with missed.
From the redraft though Ely went on the attack and after some continued pressure and a complete miss kick by their 10 Ely were the quickest to react and dive on the ball to score our first try - the conversation from Matt was just wide of the target.
Paul Dewey made some excellent runs on the left wing, only to be caught twice by their 13, who decided to use the complete mismatch in size as an opportunity to try his technic at the human discus and launch Paul into touch with a one armed fling!
A penalty in the closing stages of the half gave St Neots a 3 point lead at half time.
The second half started and Ely had all the elements, sun, wind and a slight slope in their favour.
With the clearing kicks from Matt causing havoc for the some what individual style of the backs Ely began to push for a score to take the lead.
This duelly came from persistent forward pressure and the ever lively Vic on hand to touch the ball down.
Matt cooly slotted the conversation to take Ely into a lead they were not going to relinquish.
As Ely applied more pressure the St Neots backs played more like individuals on a mission rather than as a team.
Again Ely applied pressure on St Neots attempt to run the ball and a spill from their player allowed Daz to try an audacious through the legs pass to Grant who had space to open up and score in the corner.
Matt stepped up to score a very well taken conversation from wide on the right.
From then on though St Neots fought back with strong individual runs from their 12 and 13, however the Ely covering tackles made sure our try line was not breached.
Even with Daz getting sin ginned with 10 mins to go and some very very dubious decisions from the man with the whistle before and during the match Ely dug deep to make sure St Neots did not score again.
It was a great all round performance with many players up for man of the match.
Knightys performance almost got the award, but Lee Moden just popped him to it.
Well played all a great 8 points earned!
