The rawness of the newly formed U16s was always going to be an issue in their maiden journey against the far more experienced Upper Clapton. However, the scratch side, consisting of mainly new recruits to the game from Cheshunt School, knuckled down really well despite the 27-0 defeat.

The side which is benefiting from the coaching of Phil Tucker, Phil Sanders and Steve Renny, and filling an important gap in the junior section, was pinned together by a few experienced heads from Enfield Grammar, and it more than made a game of it with the red and whites.

Steve Renny said: "A lot of boys had never played before but the side tackled its hearts out and made an few important try saving tackles which restricted Upper Clapton's lead to 10-0 at the break.

"Upper Clapton scored again after the break but they didn't land a further two tries until late in the game which is very pleasing.

"Despite the lack of experience, some of the scrummaging was excellent, and the lineout also went well, as not only were we secure on our own ball, but we also managed to pinch some of the Upper Clapton ball."

Further training sessions and games are on the agenda before the season ends.
