Ignatians Wrap Up Two Titles

It proved a momentous weekend for Enfield Ignatians as two titles were secured, with the second team sealing Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Two honours after defeating their closest rivals Hertford IVs 29-26 at Hoe Lane (March 29th).

A hat-trick from Ryan Browne plus a touchdown from another former colt and Man of the Match Sam Bucknall, coupled to nine points from the boot of Jack North, secured a hard-fought away win which was only secured five minutes from time.

However, in the words of the general, it proved a damned, close run thing, and particularly after Ignatians let a 14-0 lead slip into a 21-14 half-time deficit.

And, just as Ignatians had fought their way back to go 22-21 up, a fourth Hertford try threatened to upset the applecart before the visitors replied late-on.

The U15s snared a third consecutive league title after topping Herts-Middlesex Division Three following a hard-fought 22-5 win over Finchley. Tries by Andy Pavius (two), Cairo Sango and Zack Chun, plus a conversion from Matthew Priddle, ensured victory.

Again, it proved anything but plain sailing as Ignatians were clinging onto a 7-5 lead early in the second-half, before a three try blitz in a seven minute golden spell eventually turned the game on its head.

Coach Andy Sellick said: "We've not lost a league game for three seasons. It wasn't an easy win and we weren't always on our game against Finchley. However, we were missing some key players and can now look forward to playing second division rugby next season."

Ignatians could yet snare a third title. The U17s are currently unbeaten in Herts-Middlesex Division Four, and they will be crowned champions if they win there remaining two games against Ampthill and table-topping Harlequins.
