It's promotion time for the under fifteens

by Jonathan Landi

ENFIELD IGNATIANS celebrated promotion to a higher league after cleaning up in the proverbial away banker at Kilburn Cosmos.

A sixth win in seven games enabled the visitors to hit the magical 30 points barrier which will guarantee them at least second spot, with a mouthwatering away clash and title decider at unbeaten Harlequins yet to come on Sunday (March 25).

Ignatians look to have it had it made before the kick-off. They must have licked their lips at anticipation at the prospect of playing at a nearby pristine pitch. However, the green sward, for whatever reason, was out of bounds, and the Ignatians contingent were forced to embark on a ten minute walk to the next available arena complete with a steep incline.

After winning the toss, Ignatians opted to play down the slope but they were certainly given a game, although they had managed to secure a bonus point by half-time after tries from Luke Njoku, Ethan Renny, Aydin Ozsakin and Lewis White, plus three successful conversions from Renny and Alex Bucknall (two), underpinned a 26-12 lead.

Coach Steve Renny, clearly expecting more, laid down the law at half-time. "In what was a stop-start game, I told them that it simply wasn't enough and that they could even lose the game. I told the team that they needed to pick it up."

The response was an emphatic one as Ignatians collected a further 34 points after the interval and much improved fullback, James Ryan, hit the line at pace before bursting through for try number five. Tries from Dylan Adabie (two) and Lewis White, Aydin Ozsakin and Ethan Renny ensued as the latter trio also secured a brace each. Two of which were converted.

Coach Renny added: "I was lucky to be able to use a squad of 22 for the game. We've had a couple of new additions to the squad and are growing in strength every time. It's great to be promoted and I'm very confident that we can more than hold our own in the league above."
