Essex U16s won both their games in the Regional League this morning.

Essex U16s 33 The Downs 22
In dreadful conditions at Brunel University Essex managed to win both their games to keep alive their chances of qualifying for the national U16’s finals in May. The first game started in heavy rain with both sides struggling to handle the ball in slippery conditions. However, Louise Acons and Lara May shot well to give Essex the upper hand and take an 8-5 lead into the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was tightly contested with both sides matching each other goal for goal. Nini Mbanu was having an excellent game in the centre court winning numerous interceptions. She was well supported by Anna Hammond and Josie Gibbons. At half time Essex had edged further in front as they led 12-8.
Nicole Alves came on at the start of the second half and Essex started to dominate. Excellent defensive work from Charlotte Peters and Mia Citroen was the springboard for a series of Essex attacks. With May and Acons taking full advantage of the chancers they extended the Essex lead to 11 as they went 25-14 up with a quarter to go.
With the game effectively over Essex took their foot off the pedal in the last quarter and allowed The Downs back into the game. It was too late however, and the damage had been done as Essex coasted to a 33-22 victory.
Essex Under 16s 25 Grasshoppers 17
In their second game of the day Essex picked up another important victory as the rain continued to fall. The first quarter was a scrappy affair with lots of misplaced passes. The Essex defence made life very difficult for Grasshoppers and at the end of the first quarter Essex led 7-3.
The second quarter was very tightly fought as both sides struggled to retain possession. 5 goals each in the quarter gave Essex a 12-8 lead at half time.
Once again, the third quarter of the game proved to be decisive as Essex scored 7 goals to 3 in response from Grasshoppers to effectively seal the game.
19-11 going into the last quarter Essex once again ease up and allow Grasshoppers to reduce the deficit. The Essex lead was too much however and at the final whistle Essex had sealed a comfortable 25-17 victory.
