With all the recent snow and cold weather it is perhaps difficult to imagine the cricket season is not far away. Due to the timing of the Easter holiday we have decided to hold this year’s dinner slightly earlier than usual. Our guest speaker has now been confirmed as the former Surrey and Gloucestershire wicket keeper batsman Jon Batty. After graduating from Durham University Jon had short spell at Hampshire before moving on to Surrey. With Alec Stewart often unavailable due to England duties he was able to enjoy regular first team action as a right handed middle order batsmen. In addition he often opened the batting when Mark Butcher was also on England duty. Jon enjoyed being part of Surreys period of sustained success around the turn of the century winning three county championships.. He was appointed captain for the 2004 season after the untimely death of Ben Hollioake. During 2004 he equalled the world record for most catches in an innings with 8, against Kent at the Oval. Shortly afterwards he broke the record for most catches in a match with 11, against Lancashire, breaking the record of the then Surrey coach Steve Rixon. He was also one of only 2 players to appear in every game of Surreys 2005 campaign. He has scored over 9000 first class runs with a top score of 168 not out and was awarded a benefit in 2009 before moving onto Gloucestershire for the 2010 season.
The evening will also feature a contribution from our President Pat Neate so as usual you will be entertained by 2 speakers for the price of one. As you are probably aware capacity is limited and the last few years we have been sold out. Costs have been pegged at 25 guineas ( which is £26.25 in new money).Guests are most welcome and I would be grateful if you could let me know if you wish to come along and how many tickets you require. My mobile no is 07740239401. I have also attached a flyer in case you wish to send this on to your guests.
