The lads a ‘humdinger’ of a game this week up at Overton. We were without Harry and Ed but welcomed back Joe so had enough to play a full squad of 15.
Overton kicked off, playing down their sloped pitch. It was a somewhat messy start with two scrums in the first five minutes which led to the home side opening up the scoring with a try directly under the posts which was easily converted. Within minutes they had another seven points after their No 12 took off from the half way line without being stopped. Heathens were not fazed by this bad start and moved up a gear. The rucking practice last Wednesday came into play and having once gained possession the boys fought their way up the field and were finally rewarded with a try in the corner touched down by Zac. Minutes later they produced an almost identical try through the same process again scored by Zac. There was no time to relax as Overton came straight back with another blistering run resulting in their third try. However Heathens were on a roll and contained their attacking play forcing Overton back to their try line and eventually scoring again through Dan, this time under the posts which gave them the opportunity to convert. Just before half time a bit of confusion took place which led to the home side scoring yet again. At the whistle the score was 24:17 to Overton.
During the break the team were focused and carefully discussed what had gone right and wrong and set the strategy for the second half. This time Fareham kicked off and were playing downhill. Fired up, Fareham dominated the match for the first twenty minutes. At one point Zac went off on one of his epic runs, starting from our 22 and snaking past defenders went all the way only to be tackled and drop the ball under the posts. Thankfully Levi had kept up with him and was there to pick up and score (going to prove the importance of providing support right up to the last minute). Painfully Dave’s conversion hit the posts and failed to go over. Continuing the pressure the lads then put together another piece of great play with passes and rucks flowing, eventually leading to Dave getting a try in the corner, which made up for his earlier bad luck. Heathens were now in the lead !!. Then with only eight minutes to go, Overtons big No 11 broke through and pulled one back. This tipped the score two points in their favour. There followed a series of frenzied attacks by Fareham. The pace was incredibly quick considering the match was close to its end . Then Zac bumped heads with one of the opposition and play was stopped and failed to recommence. On the final whistle Overton had won by 29 to 27.
This was the U15s best game this season by far and was wonderful to watch. Absolutely everyone played superbly and were a credit to the club. Under the circumstances it as difficult to choose a man of the match. Dave had a great game despite having a bad back, Ethan made some blinding long passes, Lewis Gunter was in the thick of everything and Joe made a good show in his first game back. In the end MoM was awarded to Tristian due to his speedy pick-ups in the scrum and aggressive running which at times involved him pushing forward with multiple members of the opposition hanging off him.
Well done guys. Let’s see more it
