Faversham RFC 1st XV 11-5 Snowdown RFC 1st XV

Faversham bounced back from an opening week loss to beat rivals Snowdown in a hard-fought encounter at the rec through a try from Tom Scamp and the boot of Chris Gadihe

Faversham started brightly in what was their first home league game of the season, in what turned into what was sure to be one of the most physical encounters either side will face this season. Garnham, standing in as captain for the injured McDermott, was carrying well from the off, with front-foot ball Faversham looked to go wide and with good hands from Gadihe and Egleton; Hodges picked a perfect line to go crashing into the opposition’s 22. Despite what appeared to be a legitimate clear-out, Egleton was peanalised for side entry at the ruck and Faversham were marched back 10. This soon became the pattern of the game, with neither side dominating territory. With the focus appearing to be on strong carries, the match became very stop start with possession changing hands frequently. Faversham however opened the scoring 10 minutes later. A strong driving maul from the castaways led to Hodges crashing up through the 13 channel, the resulting ruck led to two Snowdown players going straight off their feet; and Gadihe slotted the 3 points from in front of the posts. This seemed to spark Faversham into life, who subsequently began creating chances without being able to find the final pass to score the try. Firstly, Dan Hall knocked-on when 20 metres from the oppositions try line with no one at home, and secondally a lost lineout on the opposition 5 metre line meant Faversham couldn’t capitalise on their dominance. Thankfully, Second Row Tom Scamp took matters into his own hands 5 minutes later with an excellent snipe down the blind side from the back of a ruck; which was so good some of Faversham’s team didn’t even notice it. Gadihe failed with the conversion leaving the score at 8-0. Snowdown came fighting back and if it wasn’t for some good defensive work from Garnham and Egleton they could have scored out wide, this level of intensity was matched by Pete Buteel and Henry Bowsher who expertly tackled Snowdown’s winger into touch just inches from the try line. Snowdown did however score their first points of the game, with their second row picking a lovely line to crash over from close range. The conversion was missed leaving the score at 8-5. With the half nearing to an end, ill-discipline from Snowdown’s forwards allowed Gadihe the chance to add 3 more points, to which he made no mistake and meant Faversham went into the break 11-5 up. The second half was arguably more physical than the first, but unfortunately, with man of the match Tony Harrison and back row players Freddie Iron and Kyle Fiddler constantly disrupting Snowdown ball, they never got a foothold back in the game. More strong carries from centres Hodges and Egleton gave Faversham plenty of front foot ball to play with but once again they could not find the score to kill the game off. This nearly came back to haunt them when firstly Fiddler was sin-binned for not rolling away, followed by another yellow card for Dan Hodges 10 seconds later for shoulder charging Snowdown’s scrum half as he took the resulting penalty quickly. This meant ‘Sham had to hold out for 10 minutes with 13 men if they wanted to record their first league win of the season. An excellent team effort ensured that this was the case, with Gadihe managing territory excellently throughout the sin bin period, and it could have been more had Egleton made a better pass after making a clean line break during the last few moments of the match. The game ended with Faversham resulting as 11-5 winners, with Tony Harrison named man of the match for his excellent defensive work in contact and at the breakdown.
