Faversham 7 - 28 Brockleians
Castaway's ill discipline and failure to adapt to referee's interpretation hamper their efforts against Brockleians.
Faversham struggled to understand the referees interpretation of laws and were frequently penalised for infringements at the line-out, tackle and breakdown in a frustrating day at the office. A Dan Martins try showed signs for optimism but ultimately proved fruitless as they conceded two tries in each half to a savvy Brockleians side.
There was little by the way of promising play for Faversham to build on as they lost almost every line-out, either to wayward throwing or by being penalised for contact in the air. The Castaways scrum set the best platform to build from. Following Brockleians opening try Luke Garnham picked from the base and found an oncoming Dan Hodges with an offload, collectively forcing their way into the opposition 22. After a series of cover tackles from Brockleians the ball eventually found its way to Sam Oatley to score, only for the referee to judge it had been dropped in the process of grounding.
As the game progressed, so did the penalty count against Faversham. Frequent indiscretion at the breakdown saw Brockleians make ground without much effort. Frustrations came to a head in the second-half as both No.8 Garnham and captain Rhys McDermott were sin-binned for late tackles. A penalty try for Brockleians consolidated an ill disciplined day for the home side.
The only bright moment for the Castaways came late in the second half as Pete Bulteel bossed the forwards through several phases to draw in the defensive line. With the opposition retreating on the back foot Bulteel put in a well weighted grubber kick for the pacey Dan Martins to chase onto for a converted try.
With only three games to go in the season, the Castaways will need two wins to avoid a bottom three finish for the first time in five years.
Faversham next play away to Askeans under lights on Friday 16th March.
