Faversham 2s go from strength to strength on a day that both clubs show their respects to those who have given their lives in order to protect ours.
Darren Cubiss and debutant Aaron Mills both scored a brace of tries as the Faversham II’s reaped the rewards from sustained intensity against Old Williamsonians II’s.
Faversham demonstrated a greatly improved level of control from their previous fixtures, allowing the home side to retain possession and build gradually through the phases. Forwards Craig Garnham, Cubiss and Mills all proved effective ball-carriers and the sustained pressure on the opposition line eventually gave way to points as Cubiss crashed through for the opening score.
The platform provided upfront allowed the backs breathing space to play the ball wide and stretch the opposition defence. The developing mid-field partnership between fly-half Pete Bulteel and centre Graeme Corner kept asking questions of the defensive line, allowing crash runners to break through. Mills showed a promising attacking threat from Number 8 to break through the smallest of defensive holes and power over the line on two occasions. Further tries followed from Cubiss and scrum-half Jack Williams, both on the receiving end of off-loads which provided a reward for their persistent support of ball-carriers.
The all round attacking performance was reinforced by defensive heroics from full-back Bertie Sanders-Champney who made no fewer than three outstanding try-saving tackles to keep Old W’s from getting back into the game. A closing try from Sanders-Champney capped an impressive man of the match performance.
Faversham 1s next play at home to Bexley on 17 November with the 2s travelling to Ash the following weekend.
The club is currently thriving under a new direction from coach Rob Dengate and offers a warm welcome to any people looking to get into rugby. Training is every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm at the Abbey School.
