TOWN SIGN OFF WITH HOME DRAW
The third meeting between these two sides this season and honours even. A narrow win apiece and this draw.
Faversham Town extended their unbeaten home run to 14 matches against a very good Cray side boasting some experienced players with higher level experience.
Faversham are the first to threaten.
George Monger swings in a free-kick from the right, Ryan Cooper stoops, but steers the header over the bar.
But Cray start to enjoy the lion's share of possession and territory. The pressure finally tells in the 17th minute. A ball delivered to Lee Prescott invites the strike from 22 yards, the shot bounces awkwardly in front of Will Godmon who makes the save, the ball is loose and Godmon saves with his legs to deny Danny Haynes following up.
The respite is minimal.
A cross delivered from the right by Karl Dent is over the head of Ryan Cheek and Haynes smashes home from inside the six yard box.
(0-1 after 17).
5 minutes later and Cray are awarded a penalty for an infringement by Monger on the edge of the area. It seemed a soft award. Haynes misses the opportunity to double Cray's lead as Godmon makes an outstanding stop stretching low to his right. Haynes follows up and trips over Godmon's leg as Godmon reacts to clear the loose ball. Faversham survive the penalty appeal this time with Haynes picking up a yellow for simulation. Possibly harsh. The second looked more of a penalty than the soft award that was given initially. But in terms of goals-perhaps justice done.
With the half entering the final minutes, Monger delivers a free-kick into the area. In a crowded area, the ball comes out to Charley Robertson but the shot is charged down and cleared.
0-1 at H-T.
A double substitution at the begining of the half sees Kyron Lightfoot and David Blaikie on for Carl Rook and Cheek.
Lightfoot's introduction paying almost instant dividends. In the 52nd minute, Monger sweeps a ball for Lightfoot. Lightfoot travels along the left touchline, gets to the byline and cuts towards the area. The ball into the area is defelected into the path of Liam King who places it beyond the keeper from 6 yards. (1-1 after 52).
With Town starting to create chances, Cray are reduced to 10 men when Haynes picks up a second yellow. The linesman seemed to indicate use of elbow.
Nick Blue comes to collect some distance outside of his area. The clearance is straight to Renford Tenyue. With the goal unguarded Tenyue takes on the long distance effort, but it drifts a couple of feet wide of the left hand post.
Monger finds Tenyue just beyond the halfway line on the left. Tenyue drives at pace along the length of the line, pulls a low ball back into the area for Luke Griffiths who swings a right leg at it but it curls just wide of the left hand post.
With the pendulum beginning to swing in Town's favour, 10 man Cray retake the lead. Cray in possession down the right, the ball is played into Dent in the area, who works some space and drills a low angled shot across Godmon into the bottom left hand corner.
(1-2 after 76 minutes).
King receives possession and carries the ball along the edge of the area, flicks a neat ball for Lightfoot in the area who is brought down. A second penalty of the match is awarded. The King, Lightfoot combination again paying dividends. Monger steps up and sweeps the ball low into the right hand corner sending Blue the wrong way. (2-2 after 82 minutes).
Town have a couple of late chances to win the game.
Lightfoot runs at the heart of the Cray defence before being upended. From 24 yards and central, Lightfoot curls the ball towards the top left hand corner. It's seemingly going in, only for Blue to make a flying save sending the ball for a corner with outstretched right hand. Stunning save.
From Monger's driven corner, Cooper's head sends it just wide of the far right hand post, with nobody arriving to make the decisive contact.
2-2 at F-T.
