CLINICAL TOWN HIT FIVE
A RUTHLESS efficiency in front of goal ensured the Lilywhites got their Bostik League campaign off to the perfect start. Not to mention four early contenders for goal of the season.
With the season just five minutes old, early pressure forces VCD defender Alastair Gordon into a poor back header into the path of Mark Lovell in the VCD penalty area. Lovell, slightly off-balance, hits goalwards, but Joe Mant in the VCD goal does enough to clear.
The respite for VCD is brief. Renford Tenyue's throw in from the left finds Charley Robertson in the area. Robertson controls, turns and smashes a volley across goal. Faversham's opening goal of the campaign cannons in off the inside of the far right hand post. With the additional drama that those smashed-in-off-the-post goals always offer to proceedings. What a start. (0-1 after 5 minutes).
It gets better.
From the centre circle, Danny Walder hooks a fine ball into the run of Liam King. King gets between and outpaces two defenders and with plenty still to do, finds a clean low strike into the bottom left hand corner that evades Mant's dive. Calmly done. Top finish.
(0-2 after 7 minutes).
With 15 minutes gone, the first threat on Faversham's goal. Simon Overland watches Steve Carvell's well-struck 25 yard free-kick sail a foot over the bar.
Ryan Cooper plays a looping ball down the right touchline, Sam Bewick's touch brings it under instant control and he drives inside and towards goal. The low drive has Mant scrambling across goal, but it's just dragged wide of the right hand post.
Again Town attack down the right. Lovell slips a clever ball into the run of Bewick. A delicious low cross into the area, crying out for a finish. King arriving in the area is so close to delivering the said finish.
0-2 at H-T. And a very decent half for Town. VCD had not been without possession, but completely nullified in the final third by a disciplined defensive unit. At the other end, Town looking dangerous every time they came forward.
Faversham start the second half on the front foot.
Jordan Casey in possession on the right touchline, waits for Bewick's run into the area. Bewick's angled low drive is gathered by Mant.
George Monger gains possession in midfield and plays a gorgeous ball into the path of King which takes out the VCD defence. With the defence seemingly static, King brings it forward and clips a ball that finds the net in off the left hand post. Neatly done. (0-3 after 47 minutes).
0-3 down and VCD show great spirit and have their best period of the match.
From the right, Omar Lawson is played into the area and in on goal. Overland comes out quickly and makes a big, big save. No way through. Corner. The corner from the right, a strong header goalwards. Ryan Cheek hooks off the line. Corner. The corner from the left, stabbed goalwards, Tenyue heads off the line.
With 15 gone, VCD win a free-kick. 25 yards and from the right. Derek Duncan's strike is dipping under the bar, but Overland gets a strong hand on it to send it over. Fine, fine save.
Five minutes later and Kemo Darboe's strike from just outside the box, smashes against the bar, bounces down onto the line and away. This is not VCD's day.
Casey and Bewick combine again. Casey in possession down the right, holds and waits for Bewick's run. Bewick's low strike is not far away. Just the wrong side of the left hand post.
With 77 minutes on the clock, Overland launches a big, big kick. From just inside the VCD area, Casey brings it under control with his right and hits it with his left. Goal from the moment it left his boot. Super strike. Route one at it's most effective. (0-4 after 77 minutes).
In the final minute and still pushing. Cooper does well down the right, drives into the area and a one-two with King, but upended. Referee points to the spot. There's no hint of sentiment. Complete professionalism. As regular penalty taker Bewick steps up rather than King on a hat-trick. Bewick's strike down the middle is saved by Mant, but Bewick reacts quickest to stab the ball home from a yard out. (0-5 after 90 minutes).
0-5 at F-T. Early doors, but this is a very decent result. 0-5 suggests this was a stroll. By no means. This was hard-earned. A fine away performance with some well executed (cracking) goals. VCD will cause plenty of teams problems this year. A fine result.
