CASUALS EDGE OUT LILYWHITES
MATCHES between Walton Casuals and Faversham are almost a guarantee of goals. And so it proved again.
Add a sprinkle of controversy and there was plenty of entertainment on offer. The great pity is that there were only a meagre 44 spectators to witness it.
Casuals are the first to threaten after five minutes. Alex Kelly's inswinging corner from the right is deflected out of the area via a throng of players to Josh Kelly who hits goalwards. Sam Bewick is positioned in the right place to head off the line.
A Walton Casuals throw from their right and the resultant attack, deep in Town territory is broken up. Macauley Murray rolls a ball for George Monger who finds a 65 yard ball for Liam King on Faversham's right. King finds space past his two defenders and from outside of the area hits a sweetly struck, low angled shot across the keeper which subsequently nestles into the side of the netting. (0-1 after 11 minutes).
The lead is short-lived. Monger concedes a cheap free-kick from 25 yards. Daryl Colemen curls it into the the top right-hand corner just evading Simon Overland's outstretched left hand. (1-1 after 20 minutes).
Casauls continue on tne offensive. Josh Kelly's cross from the left to the far post is met by a Casuals head. Overland gets down quickly to make the save.
And then on the half hour, a pivotal moment. A ball into the Faversham area, a Casuals attacker gets in front of Matt Bourne, but the Casuals man loses control and it goes of play. The officials disagree with the majority view and award the corner rather than the goal kick. From the resultant corner, Renford Tenyue, on sentry duty on the line, is adjudged to have handled. Harsh. The referee elects for double punishment. He awards Casuals a penalty and Tenyue a straight red. Doubly harsh. Rosco D'Sane makes short work of the penalty drilling it low into the left hand corner. (2-1 on 30 minutes).
Town attempt an immediate riposte. King receives the ball in the attacking half, turns, runs and finds a ball for Ryan Cooper's run down the right. Cooper gets to the byline and slots a ball for Jordan Casey in the area. Casey's stabbed effort from close range is saved by the keeper's legs.
But Casuals are soon well and truly in the driving seat. In the Town penalty area, Joe Hicks is allowed to turn between two defenders and squeezes a low shot just inside the right hand post. (3-1 after 37 minutes).
3-1 at H-T.
Early in the second half, and Casuals start on the front foot. Coleman's effort from 30 yards has Overland diving towards his right hand post to tip the effort round for a corner.
Monger swings in a Town corner from the right, Bourne's header finds Kyron Lightfoot outside of the area, Lightfoot puts it back in. Danny Walder gets the slightest of touches, but it drifts the wrong side of the left hand post.
Coleman again fancies his chances from distance, fizzing a 25 yarder past Overland's right hand post.
Another Faversham corner. Monger's inswinger ito the ares. A veritable melee in the area and appeals for hand-ball. The referee awards the penalty, but this time contents himself with awarding the offender a yellow. Bewick keeps his composure and confidently finds the bottom left corner sending the keeper the wrong way. (3-2 after 73 minutes).
And six minutes later, despite the man disadvantage, Town complete a remarkable comeback. Overland comes out of his area (wide left and 10 yards inside the Town half) and launches a free-kick into the Casuals area. Casey's backwards, flicked header, loops high over the Casual's keeper and dips under the bar on it's way back down. A freaky goal? Maybe-but they all count. (3-3 after 79 minutes).
Casuals immediately come forward. Sean McCormack from the right drills a low hard shot goalwards. Overland makes a great block, but Casuals come again. A cross into the box, is headed across goal and Lartley Sarpong is on hand to slot the ball home (4-3 after 80 minutes). Within a minute Casuals wrest back the lead.
After having worked so hard to get back into the game, it seemed such a soft goal to concede what would have been a well-earned point.
Casuals break up a Town attack and counter swiftly. A delivery is swept into the area and hit goalwards. Bewick gets back in an attempt to clear off the line. For all world it looks as if it's gone in and hit the back of the net. But no, no goal awarded. It must have been close.
Town have one last chance to rescue a point. With Town committing numbers forward, Walder's delivery from the free-kick looks promising, but the keeper dashes Town's final hope and claims well.
4-3 at F-T.
One of those difficult results to take. Drama after 79 minutes. The Agony and the Ecstasy (albeit vice versa-and only 1 minute running time).
Town can justifiably claim to have been low on luck in the last two Bostik encounters. Some big decisions not going our way. We go again Monday. Herne Bay visit. COYW.
