TOWN HOLD CRAY
An absorbing game saw Faversham Town deservedly end their recent losing run against free-scoring Cray Wanderers.
The first 20 minutes are an even affair. Neither side forcing the opposing keeper into action. Cray look confident (unsurprising coming off the back of an 8-0 victory), passing and probing for a chink in the Faversham Town defensive armour. They find none: a combination of hard work and organisation, comfortably keep Cray at arms length.
And as the minutes pass, Town grow more and more into the game. With the momentum, chances appear.
George Monger and Luke Griffiths combine to work the ball forward down the left. Forward again for Liam King. King gets into the box and pulls it back. The ball comes to Griffiths who manages to get a shot away, it passes the defenders but also wide of the left hand post.
Sam Bewick picks up possession in centre midfield and drives forward, slips a ball into Griffiths' run into the area, but under considerable pressure from a defender, the shot is comfortably wide.
Danny Walder whips a low corner in from the left. Begging for a touch, it flashes across the Cray goal and out for a goal kick.
Cray start to exert some pressure of their own. Two Cray forays result in yellows for Walder and then Ryan Cheek.
From the latter award, Jerome Federico's deep free-kick towards the back stick, forces Overland to punch into the path of the oncoming Jay Leader, but it's on to him quickly and he can only force it wide.
Chris Barnard sends a high looping cross to the back stick, but under pressure Mark Lovell sends his header wide of the left hand post.
Federico from the right delivers another searching ball into the Faversham area, but with space and time Jay Leader heads over.
Walder from the right finds Griffiths in the area, the low shot towards the left hand post is deflected for a corner. Walder sends another low whipped corner into the area and it's forced into the back of the Cray net. With the fans celebrations beginning, players trotting back for the restart and the stadium announcer in the throes of detailing the goal, the referee disallows the goal.
0-0 at H-T.
Early in the half, a Walder free-kick is headed towards Lovell who heads home, but it's ruled offside.
King's persistence pays off and wins possession towards the Cray byline, pulls it back for Monger who floats an inviting cross to the back stick. Too inviting. Bewick and Lovell both go for it and then neither go for it. The chance goes begging.
Cray pressure starts to intensify.
Rhule made progress down the left, delivered a low, hard centre, met by Michael Power arriving at the back stick but the connection from 6 yards sends it out for a goal kick. Close call for Town.
Cray work the ball down the left and into the path of Power. The low shot from 20 yard flashes narrowly past the right hand post. Another close call.
Ben Mundele drives down the left and finds Federico who delivers a whipped cross into the six yard area. Oliver Lee running towards his own goal lunges back and makes the block. Somehow it goes over the bar.
With 10 to go, Dean Carpenter picks up possession and lets fly from 30 yards. With Simon Overland diving full stretch towards his right hand post, the strike rattles the advertising hoardings.
Into the closing stages and a Walder free-kick from 30 yards is spilled by Nick Blue and out for a corner.
A Faversham corner from the left, a scramble in the area. Monger gets a shot towards goal, but too many bodies and it's blocked.
A final chance. Walder's free-kick from the left is floated beyond the far post. It comes back across to King in the area, facing the left post, but the shot is dragged wide.
0-0 at F-T.
A thoroughly entertaining match to which both teams contributed fully. As for Town a hugely encouraging performance carrying on from the
showing in the second half at Waltham Abbey.
