THREE points. That was the major objective in this match. Three points. It was vital that Town brought the series of league defeats to an end.
To achieve that, Town needed to overcome high-flying Sittingbourne. Add into the mix difficult playing conditions, the Kent derby element and it's far from a foregone conclusion.
As if to underline the Sittingbourne threat, on 10 minutes, Chris Elliot's low drive across goal has Simon Overland stretching to force the ball past his left hand post and out for a corner.
But Town grow into the game and presentable chances appear.
George Monger in an advanced position rolls the ball for Jordan Casey. Monger picks up the return ball and fires a low shot across Darren Hawkes in the Brickies' goal. Hawkes pulls off a similar save to Overland's earlier and sends it round his right hand post.
Danny Walder almost scores direct from the corner but a defender heads it off the line for another corner.
Town continue to exert pressure.
A long Overland clearance is chipped forward into Liam King's run by Mark Lovell. From the edge of the area King hits it first time forcing a decent save from the Brickies' keeper who diverts it for a corner.
Walder's high inswinging corner from the left is cleared off the line. Another corner. A lower driven corner this time. Stabbed away by a defender at the near post. Another corner. Walder sends successive corner number 3 into the centre of the box. Macauley Murray gets a flicked header across goal and Matt Bourne is on hand, and with a slight stoop, nods it home at the back post. (1-0 after 32).
1-0 at H-T.
The Lilywhites carve out an early chance. Walder's corner from the left and Lovell's header flashes past the right hand post. But chances are at a premium in an eagerly contested half.
The Walder/Lovell combination nearly puts clear daylight between the teams. Walder's free-kick from the right is met by Lovell's diving header only for the header to pass the wrong side of the post.
A Sittingbourne corner from the left, a misdirected Faversham header sends it towards goal. The Sittingbourne recipient of the gift can't adjust quickly enough and send his header over the bar.
Overland's huge clearance gives something for King to chase. Hawkes comes to meet, but under pressure from King the keepers' clearance is picked up by Lovell. Lovell's chip beat the keeper but a diving header by a Sittingbourne defender prevents the goal at the expense of a corner.
With Town playing time out to secure the victory, a final scare for those of a Lilywhite persuasion. Renford Tenyue in possession and with no immediate threat offered by Sittingbourne, loses his footing and possession. One final away chance to deny Town those coveted 3 points. Overland makes short work of the strike, gathering low as it bounces awkwardly in front of him. Comfortably done.
1-0 at F-T.
Three points delivered. Not an easy game by any means, but Faversham have carved out the better chances. Deserved victory.
