GRIFFITHS DOUBLE SINKS VICKERS
Faversham Town registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season. The Lilywhites came from behind to earn a well-deserved victory at a very blustery Salters Lane, Luke Griffiths capping a man-of-the-match performance with two goals.
Faversham Town are on to the front foot quickly.
With only two minutes on the clock, a ball played in for Carl Rook results in the Town forward being pushed in the back and a free-kick for the Lilywhites. An early chance to gauge the effect of a strong wind. Danny Walder's 25-yard free-kick from the left is wide and over. But not by much.
Another Walder free-kick, this time from the right, forces VCD keeper Joe Mant to tip the direct strike away for a corner.
Town continue to have the better of things. George Monger picks up possession on the left and drifts inside and rolls a ball for Ernest Okoh. Okoh takes it on and finds Rook with back to goal who in turn lays it off for Chris Barnard on the right. Barnard delivers a cross toward the centre of goal which finds Rook now just outside the six yard area. The header has plenty of power but narrowly over. Difficult chance, but a fine passing move.
Kamarl Duncan takes a long thrown on the right for VCD. It's touched on into the path of Ellis Brown. Brown brings it forward, he looks like he wants to shoot. No challenge. Forward some more, still no challenge and still looking like a shot is imminent. Into the area and Brown unleashes a sweetly struck shot that flies past Simon Overland's dive and into the net. VCD's first meaningful attack and they take the lead.
(0-1 after 20 minutes).
The setback affects Town and the chances that were being created now dry up.
VCD almost double their lead. From the left, the ball is played into Brown by the D. With back to goal, Brown turns and shoots with the low strike narrowly wide of the right hand post.
A long Overland kick is headed on by Mark Lovell into the area. With Rook challenging in the air, the keeper just manages to punch clear. But a close call for the keeper.
Okoh is forced off injured and replaced by Matt Bourne, Dan Carrington goes into midfield.
0-1 at H-T.
Town start the second half as they did the first. But crucially this half, take their chances.
Overland sends one long into the opposition penalty area. Appeals for handball are ignored by the official. The ball comes out to Lovell who hits it first time, sending a low strike narrowly wide.
Carrington picks the ball up, advances and from just outside the area takes the shot on. The shot is blocked, but Griffiths is in the right place at the right time to slot home the loose ball. (1-1 after 48 minutes).
From an Overland kick, Monger's backward header is into the path of Griffiths who shoots from 20 yards, but the keeper comfortably gathers in his midriff.
Barnard takes a throw from the right. Rook lays off for Griffiths who takes it into the area and steers an exquisite, composed strike with the outside of his right boot past Mant and into the far corner. Super goal. 5 goals in 5 games from Griffiths. (2-1 after 52 minutes).
With 67 minutes on the clock a pivotal two minutes.
A long ball forward releases VCD's Kemo Darboe for a run in on the Faversham goal. Bourne gets back and makes it difficult for Darboe, but still the VCD forward gets a shot on goal from the edge of the area. Overland who has come out to narrow the angle makes a fine, fine save diving low to his right.
At the other end, two minutes later, Walder's corner from the right is met by Oliver Lee's header from close range which finds the back of the VCD net and effectively seal the three points. (3-1 after 69 minutes).
Fine margins in this game. Town 3-1 up. But for some last-ditch defending and a fine save it could've been 2-2.
A Walder free-kick from the right causes havoc in the VCD area. The keeper gets something on it but misjudges. As it squirms towards the goal line, it's hacked off the line and away to safety.
Town comfortably see the game out to register a vital victory.
