LILYWHITES FRUSTRATED IN CUP STALEMATE
WITH neither keeper being called into serious action (bar one effort) during the 90+ minutes of this FA Cup tie, 0-0 was the natural consequence. FA Cup fever never really got going in South Norwood today.
Perhaps the sparsely populated athletics stadium (officially 110) and the awkward windy conditions played their part in a match that never ignited. Plenty of effort and endeavour from both sides, but little in terms of goal mouth action for the punters to get overly excited about.
Faversham would dominate the corner (and free-kick) count during the match. The first corner arrives on 15 minutes. Danny Walder's inswinging kick from the right is met by Mark Lovell's close range header, the slightest of touches. Another corner as the ball is deflected wide.
Another corner on 28. Again inswinging from Walder, Matt Bourne gets up to head goalwards. Somehow a deflection sends the ball for a throw-in.
A controversial moment at the 30 minute mark. Sam Bewick from the right, picks out Liam King's run. A high, curling ball. Alex Hewitt in the Croydon goal comes to meet. With Hewitt and King on a seeming collision course, Hewitt misjudges and the ball subsequently bounces over his head. King rounds Hewitt and into the area with Hewitt subsequently tugging on King's shirt. The referee seems to have a good view of proceedings and elects to allow play to continue. The collective reaction from Town fans indicates a certain dissatisfaction with the decision.
Another corner. Walder from the left. The Croydon defense see it out of the area but only into the path of George Monger. From 25 yards Monger's half-volley is straight into the keeper's midriff.
0-0 at H-T.
Early in the half, Croydon manufacture their best/only chance thus far. A ball swung in from the right, finds Lauris Chin in the area and behind the Town defence. With just Simon Overland to beat, Chin's effort is weak. Easy pickings for Overland.
At the other end, Faversham win a fortunate free-kick when King is deemed to have been fouled a few yards outside the area. From the right Walder whips a ball in, Lovell's header is narrowly over. Close.
But with the second half 20 minutes old, the underdogs from Croydon have kept themselves in the game. Presumably game plan objective one achieved. Croydon start to push on. Croydon get in behind a couple of times - but ultimately defended.
Croydon's Matt Weller unleashes a 40 yard dipping effort from centre midfield. Arrowing under the bar, Overland is forced into serious action (see opening paragraph) and palms it over. Fine stop.
At the other end, Bewick rolls a ball for Macauley Murray on the right touchline. Murray delivers into the area. Lovell's header is safely gathered by Hewitt.
A similar move. This time Monger feeds Murray. A low delivery this time, but again Lovell's headed effort causes the Croydon keeper no problems.
Chin for Croydon make progress down their left. Gets to the byline and cuts in. With support arriving, Chin elects to play it into the area with the outside of his boot. Overland makes an important interception.
Faversham enjoy the better of the closing moments. A series of attacks and pressure but without forcing the keeper into a serious save.
One final throw of the die. A late free-kick. Walder delivers from the right, Bourne's backwards flicked header sends it towards the far post, but Tenyue is crowded out and unable to force the ball home.
0-0 at F-T.
To Salters Lane on Tuesday for the replay. COYW.
