Bedford hits Double in Town win

Town back at Jubilee Field for their first league meeting of the season v Staplehurst Monarchs Reserves. Town made the trip preseason for a friendly v Monarchs First team.
Town looking to bounce back from their defeat last time out welcomed back Joe Lester. Lester in the starting line up for the first time since December due to work commitments. Town started the game without the ever-present Ryan ‘Macca’ Macdonald caught in traffic and struggling to make kick off.
Town without a fixture last weekend and no training midweek found the first half hour of the game very tuff. Matt Bowey produced a fine save tipping over the crossbar from a stinging shot.
Monarchs playing well and showing their desire although one tackle was late on Callum Leader. Leader did well to carry on after the heavy challenge. Joe Lester broke clear of the Monarchs defence the Staplehurst keeper just getting to the ball first. A change in the Town formation sore the young Lilywhites come into the game and finished the last 10mins of the half well. Lester and Clark kept the Monarchs defence on their toes in the first half and Leader started to cause Staplehurst problems down the left wing. Bowey was in fine form between the posts and saved another effort from Monarchs. Bowey produced his best save late in the first half although the Monarchs striker was later ruled offside Bowey didn’t wait for the flag and one on one with the big striker saved superbly down low with his right boot.

The reshaped formation sore the midfield of Sean Mchugh, George Greenway and Liam Druggan start to get the better of their opponents.

Town now playing with a lot more confidence and on the 55-minute mark made the breakthrough. Nye Griffiths rising unmarked to head in from a Druggan corner. One from the training field as coach Guy William told Griffiths at halftime this is what he should do on the next corner.

Dan King played a ball out of defence to Joe Lester who showed his pace and strength to hold off the Monarchs defender and slot home for Towns second goal.
The energetic Josh Benocci had to leave the field with a knee injury replaced by Washington Christian-Vale.
Sean Mchugh made way for Macca Mchugh still living off the back of his March Super6 grassroots goal of the season nomination put a great shift in for Town especially with no sleep as he worked a night shift before.
Lester then made way for Reece Bedford. Monarchs not laying down and still looking for a result themselves showed their commitment another over the top tackle. Leader again on the receiving end from the same player this time the ref pulling out his card. The Monarchs forward can consider himself lucky only being shown a yellow card.

Nye Griffiths headed clearance was played back over the Faversham defence Ryan MacDonald was covering and his long clearance set the speedy Bedford away down the left flank. Bedford on the left-hand corner of the area had plenty to do Bedford cut inside the Staplehurst defender and left the keeper no chance with a superb right-foot strike into the left-hand side of the goal.

5 mins later Bedford bagged his second of the game. George Greenway starting the move winning a sliding tackle deep in Towns half Greenway played the ball into King who’s nonchalant first-time pass into the path of Druggan. Druggan without breaking stride played Bedford in again. Bedford was away he rode a tackle on the edge of the box and slotted calmly past the onrushing keeper.

Impressive performance from Town to bounce back from their last defeat. The Town defence looked solid Holliday, Griffiths, Macca Marshalled by Captain Dan King kept Monarchs attack at bay and deserved their clean sheet. Ryan Clark, Lester and Leader didn’t give Monarchs defence a moments rest. Washington Christian-vale, DC for short showed his promise coming off the bench strong in the tackle and willing to take his player on. Druggan again showed his quality on the ball. Bedford showing his turn of foot with two quickfire goals off the bench. Also good news George Greenway playing his first full 90 minutes of the season despite recent health concerns. Man of the Match Matt Bowey, when called on, made some fine saves and gave his team the platform and confidence to push on for the win.
