An under strength Fife Southern team made the journey north today, braving the elements for the league game against Madras FP.

The pitch passed inspection and the game commenced, timed nicely with the first wave of snow that was to be a recurring theme throughout the game. Fife Southern held their own for the first ten to fifteen minutes and the score was nil all, however Madras soon capitalised on Southerns mistakes and scored their first try.

A regroup saw some solid tackling from Fife Southern and also the realisation their scrum was the far stronger of the two packs. Good driving scrums were being twisted and turned by a weaker Madras pack, however the referee was not making any penalty calls on this. The game continued with Madras picking up points only through errors from the Southern boys.

During the half time break Fife Southern's winger Connor Lee Edwards had to go off as he was coming down due to the effects of the cold - and it has to be said the lack of ball making its way to him so he could run about!

Southern restarted and were immediately on the front foot with a driving scrum that was finally penalised after it collapsed near the Madras tryline. Southern chose to scrum again and and Dave Gell broke through from the base to score Southerns first points. Ryan Shannon converted well from a tough angle and in blustery conditions.

The restart did not go well however and Southern took the scrum, dominating the drive. Play became evenly balanced for a while but again, errors crept in and Madras capitalised, electing to kick at goal, although when missed was not cleared by Southern and a three points became seven.

The game was eventually cut short and the score stood at 34-7 as Fife Southern were reduced to twelve men due to injuries and the conditions were turning again for the worse. Both teams praised each other and headed in quickly to defrost!

Notable performances today came in the shape of some solid tackling from Dave Gell, Dugald West and Andy Brown and for some great ball carrying, the somewhat inexperienced giant - Davy Smith!

Fife Southern need to keep on working hard in order to limit the number of errors that are costing them points.....but as the saying goes.....good things come to those who work hard for them!
