FINCHLEY RFC

Finchley 46 - 17 Hertford

by Michael Clifford

A good win on Sunday and a much better display than the disappointingly heavy defeat by Aylesford the week before.
Having said that it looked, for the first five minutes, as if that lack of concentration and effort was going to repeat itself as Hertford's heavy pack used the wind and slope to put pressure on our line, and then drive over to score and convert. But Finchley came back and through a series of drives and good support in the loose, Matthew dived over to score. Finchley came straight back on the attack and after a line out 10m from Hertford's line the ball went down the backs for Jack G to drive over and score. Hertford's forwards continue to press but despite the lighter pack we controlled much of the play. From a line out, a ruck formed and Jimmy came out with the ball and broke through their defence, he was caught 10m from the line but popped it to Nico, who crossed to score. Half time 15-7.

The second half started really well with Finchley forwards turning over the restart and passing down the line for Kofi to round his opposite winger to score in the corner. The running of our forwards continued to break up play and coupled with good tackling of their heavy pack we contained there play for much of second half and following a series of drives Nico broke from the 22m to score under the posts, which he then converted. Hertford came back and their backs made space following a scrum and their centre scored by the posts which they converted. Following a good scrum the backs broke forward with Cal coming into the line, creating the overlap, lobbed the ball to Kofi who scored his second. From the restart again there was good forward pressure and from the maul Rob fed the ball to Niall who set Matthew on a great line to score under the posts, which Nico again converted.
A similar move gave Finchley their last score and Nico his hat-trick, diving over beside the posts. Finchley got a little distracted in the last 5 minutes and Hertford rallied pushing toward the line following an unnecessary penalty, and march-back. From this their big prop (who was now at No8) was the obvious option and they used it, and he drove over to score.

Final score 46-17. It was a fast flowing game that tested our fitness and was a good win to build on for the new year.
