On a sweltering day the first half was completely controlled by Finchley. As expected Barnet threw everything at us in the first 15mins but we held it and set up three or four good chances to score but each time were stopped just short of the line. Unfortunately a mistake then allowed Barnet to break through the middle before spreading the ball to score first. Finchley came back again strongly and used the backs to shift the ball wide for Matthew and then Inigo to score two quick tries that the earlier moves had promised, to take the lead, but Barnet seized on another mistake for a converted score to lead 12-10 at half-time.
Finchley dominated the scrum throughout the game and took three against the head but we gave their No.10 too much space and in the second half and the Barnet backs grew in confidence, scoring in the corner soon after the break. Finchley forwards again exerted their power in the maul and rolled up field and Jack Bourke
dived over for a score by the posts which Niall converted to make it 17-17.
Despite getting level some poor decisions and simple errors gave them a chance to come back and we started to lose focus. Barnet exploited this and went to run in three more tries all converted.
We lost a game we should have won, and we need to learn from this and show more intelligence in our next game if we are to show what we are capable of.
