Finchley U16s 38 - 5 Harlow U16s
A 38-5 win against Harlow, with everyone in the squad playing and everyone contributing to the win.
The game started slowly for Finchley playing against the wind and a heavy Harlow pack. For the first 10 minutes we were held in our own half, with their full back making a series of breaks and following a scrum Harlow pushed the ball wide to score in the corner.
Finchley settled and then started to play more fluidly, and following a series of breaks Nico picked up to score 10m in from the touchline. The tackling was generally very good and their were not able to build any momentum. The forwards started to exploit their mobility with good hands and continuity down the opposite side of the pitch with finally Jack Stevens crossing in the corner with his first try in four seasons! From the kick off Nico collected the ball and made good ground linking with the backs and Matthew weaved through a series of tackles to score under the posts which Niall converted. Half-time it was 17-5.
In the first part of second half all the rest of the squad came on, with three players, Antonio, James and Taran on for their debuts. They continued the good work despite coming under pressure close to our line, the defence was excellent and they were not able to get through. Further changes were made and the forwards took a lineout against the head and rove toward Harlow's line. Seamus was just denied after his foot went in touch but a minute later he drove through to score, Niall converted. Pressure continued on their backs and following a handling error Inigo scored under the posts, again Niall converted.
After the final set of changes the forwards continued put pressure on Harlow's line. After a series of rucks, Yiannis and Aidan broke through supporting each other before slipping the ball to Matthew who broke through from 5m out to score his second under the posts, which Cal converted.
A great start to the season.
