Twickenham 8 - 13 Finchley
Finchley played as many reserves as possible in this friendly against Twickenham - a team we'd not played since U13 - on a dry and dusty pitch.
The first half was really scrappy with far too many mistakes and soft penalties given away. They scored first with a fine penalty kick from well outside the twenty two from their full back. He was their key threat but was soon read by the Finchley centres, The Finchley forwards started to move into gear but despite a number of individual breaks too often the support wasn't on hand to keep the momentum going, and this speed of recovery and maintaining of the pace needs some work.
At half time it was 3-0. In the first 5 minutes of the second half Finchley were still re-organising after substitutions when the full back broke down the blind side to score in the corner, 0-8. At last though Finchley started to play with some continuity, the back row picked up the pace and their linking play kept Twickenham on the back foot for a sustained period. Pressure exerted in their 22m lead to a quick penalty from which Will dived over to score on the line. The speed of the play started to pay off with Finchley's fitness showing well and after a further period of pressure the ball broke and Niall ran cross-field and reached Jack Greenword with a long pass, Jack outpaced two defenders to score in the corner to give Finchley a 10-8 lead. Finchley continued to dominate and in the last 10 minutes another penalty was awarded, in front of the posts, which Inigo kicked; 13-8.
