FWOE 26 – 10 Old Griffs
A fantastic win but at a cost!
Having not registered a win in the league prior to Saturday and having been convincingly beaten by our visitors in the cup, things didn’t look great. This was worsened by the usual number of late cry offs, which if we are to build on this win must stop!
Despite this Ways produced an outstanding performance and were convincing winners. The only sour note was the injury to Andy that saw us having to move pitches while he waited for an Ambulance to get him off the field. Having heard that it is ligament damage rather than a break is good news and we hope to see him back as soon as possible.
Unlike most of our previous games we got off to a strong start and immediately scored a converted try through Dean on the wing. We were dominating the scrum, winning our ball and all of Griffs. A blood injury to their No8 led to a reshuffle of their pack, which in turn strengthened their scrum considerably. Against the run of play, Griff’s managed an unconverted try, leaving the score at the break 7 – 5. Given our dominance, our advantage should have been considerably greater.
From the restart we were soon on the attack and Dean scored his second try after some good work from the backs. Our third try followed almost immediately and while we remained in control we couldn’t manage the bonus point try. Griffs competed hard and managed a score that may have worried some of the home support.
There was then a break in play due to the injury to Andy, which given he was having a strong game probably worried the support further. Once we restarted we were again on the attack and following a couple of strong runs from the forwards, the backs used the ball well to put Foxall over for a well deserved score.
Everyone played their part in what was a great win, although a special mention must go to the lads in the second row who both played out their skins having been called up late. We now face Wheaton Aston on Saturday and really must build on this.
