Fleetwood couldn’t muster a final-day win to end their mid-table season but skipper Ricky Newton took many positives from the game, and the season as a whole.

“We didn’t really deserve that score line after the work we put into the game. I talked before the start that we should go out and enjoy the last game of the season. The lads did that and played without any pressure but Aspatria had the edge.

“The lads shouldn’t go away disappointed. Overall we’ve put in a good season. They need to go away, enjoy the rest and prepare for pre-season. Finishing in 7th place in the Cumbria & North Lancashire table was one step ahead of the last campaign. Our target at the start of the year was to better our position from the previous season and we’ve achieved that goal.”

Newton then turned his attention to Fleetwood’s building process and the introduction of young players.

“Looking at the age of our squad, and apart from one or two more senior players, our oldest player is only 25. We are building for the future and we’ve fielded three 17 year olds this season. In two or three years, and with more experience under their belt, I’m convinced we will be competing for the league title.

“Hopefully we won’t lose too many of the senior players because of age next season. Myself and Paul Bamber are looking to continue as is Rob Brookfield. I’m not sure about Steve Woodburn as he continues to recover from his knee injury.

"If we can keep the Colts coming through to the first XV then that will take pressure off the old hands.

“The Colts and junior section at the club are second to none and we have a good structure behind the scenes. They all do good work to ensure the Colts are ready to step up.

"It’s brilliant to see the kids training and playing and the atmosphere is always positive. It’s important we all play in the same manner through the club and that allows players to step up when called on. The ultimate is to play for the first team and it’s been shown this season that the path is available.”

The senior presentation takes place on Saturday 14th May. Tickets are £20 for a 3 course meal and after dinner speaker is Ray French.
