Point Apiece In Stalemate
A second half strike from Jon Edmonds rescues a point as Flint Mountain can only draw with Brymbo Victoria at the Pavilion
After victory over Brymbo Victoria on Saturday, the season then thrown the two clubs again, as Flint Mountain then welcomed Brymbo to the Pavilion on Tuesday evening. Despite the win, manager Rob Marshall made some changes to the starting line up to cover for missing players. Goalkeeper Kirk Russell was restored between the posts, with Joey Davies, Mark Williams, Mike Reid and Liam Mortimer all back in.
Both teams immediately looked to get into the game, with Flint Mountain looking to exploit Brymbo in the same way as the previous game. Despite this, it was Brymbo who took the lead after seven minutes. With the ball played down the wing, the Brymbo player beat the defence to the ball, before cutting inside and firing a low shot into the bottom corner. Mountain tried to respond, but could not find an equaliser. Both Jon Edmonds and Sean Wilkes both had chances to score, but Edmonds saw his shot saved and Wilkes' chip went narrowly over the crossbar.
It was not until just before half time that Flint Mountain got back into the game. Bursting into the penalty area, Jon Edmonds was scythed down the chasing defender and the referee pointed to the spot. As he did on Saturday, Sean Wilkes stepped up and buried the ball into the bottom corner. The Mountain could not hold the level score until half time, however, as Brymbo retook the lead just before the whistle. A long ball forward found a midfielder unmarked, and he headed the ball through towards goal. Again unmarked, the Brymbo striker run through on goal and stabbed the ball past Kirk Russell and into the net.
In the second half, Flint Mountain took control of the game as they pressed for an equaliser. Twenty minutes into the half, they finally get back level. Picking up the ball on the left, Jon Edmonds got past his man before firing a low shot past the goalkeeper, for his first Flint Mountain goal since his move from Halkyn United. With continued pressure, Sean Wilkes was then unlucky not to put the Mountain into the lead. However, his shot hit the inside of the post before rolling across the line and away from goal. Despite several further chances and also hitting the crossbar late on, the Mountain could not find another way through and Brymbo held on for a point.
Next up for Flint Mountain is the final game of the season, as they welcome Rhosllanerchrugog to the Pavilion on Thursday evening. We hope you can join us as the curtain falls on the season.
