Mountain Take Down Brymbo
Two goals from Sean Wilkes and one from Jimmy McGlone ensure Flint Mountain finish their final away game with all three points against Brymbo Victoria
After yet another defeat on Thursday evening against Airbus Academy, Flint Mountain faced their final away trip of the season, where they were welcomed by Brymbo Victoria. Yet more chopping and changing was needed due to absences, with Leon Pickford again called upon to deputise between the sticks, whilst there were also starts for Liam Mortimer, Keiran Farr, David James Jones, Tommy O'Neil, Sean Wilkes and Jon Edmonds.
Brymbo could have been ahead very early on, but stand in goalkeeper Leon Pickford made a good save to deny Brymbo. Flint Mountain then got themselves into the game as Jack Aitken began to terrorise the Brymbo left back. Despite beating him several times, however, the chances did not provide any clear chances. The pressure continued until Jon Edmonds won a penalty. Picking up the ball on the left, Edmonds turned his man and burst forward towards goal. In a desperate effort to retrieve the ball, the Brymbo defender brought down the Mountain striker and the referee pointed to the spot. The task of scoring the penalty fell to Sean Wilkes, who calmly stroked the ball home to give Flint Mountain a deserved first half lead going into the break.
In the second half, Brymbo again started brightly, but their early pressure again did not amount to anything. The Mountain also looked to increase their lead, but wastful finishing meant the score remained level until the middle of the second half, where Brymbo grabbed an equaliser. With a long ball played into the area, a mix up somehow saw the ball squirm into the path of a Brymbo player, who simply passed the ball into the empty net.
The level scoreline did not last long, as Flint Mountain retook the lead just seconds after the restart. The ball was immediately played out to stand in left back Mark Hughes, who found Jon Edmonds on the eighteen yard box. Edmonds flicked the ball into the path of Sean Wilkes, who fired a low shot past the goalkeeper and into the net. Mountain then increased their lead only two minutes later. With the ball played through to Jimmy McGlone, the substitute managed to get past the goalkeeper, and with two defenders on the line, he found the back of the net. Despite some more chances, the score remained the same and Flint Mountain claimed all three points.
It's back to the Pavilion next, as Flint Mountain welcome Brymbo back to Northop Hall as the two sides face off against each other again on Tuesday evening.
