Flint end season with a draw in the Bank Holiday sunshine
Flint extended their end of season unbeaten run to eight games at Porthmadog, with a creditable draw.
In a side that saw several changes to the line up from Saturday's cup final, manager Niall McGuinness can take great heart from the performance, particularly that of the youngsters.
One of these, Elliot Quinlan, pulled off a great save on 10 minutes, when he foiled Port's Sion Bradley, who shot from the edge of the box.
The hosts took the lead on 22 minutes, when Tomos Emlyn put in a teasing cross, that took a wicked bobble, and deceived Quinlan as he tried to collect it. Joe Chaplin was quickest to react to the loose ball, and followed up to score.
Flint almost hit back a few minutes later, when another of their youngsters, Pete Martin, hit an effort from 20 yards out, but Port keeper Richard Harvey denied him.
Mark Cadwallader was allowed a free run at goal on 38 minutes, but rather than shoot, he tried to square the ball, and Harvey cleared the danger. Just before the break, Flint were denied what they thought was a clear penalty for handball, and so they trailed by a single goal at the interval.
Nothing much of note happened for long periods of the second half, until the game entered the closing stages. On 75 minutes, Cadwallader hit a long range effort that had Harvey diving low to make the save. Port replied through a good chance of their own a couple of minutes later, when Julian Williams delivered a dangerous deep cross, and Cai Jones headed just over the bar.
Flint almost grabbed the equaliser on 89 minutes, when from a Richie Foulkes flick on, Kyle Smyth toe poked an effort just wide. But the Silkmen were not quite done, and they were handed a lifeline two minutes into stoppage time, when this time a penalty was given for handball. It was probably a fitting end to the season that Foulkes, who has been so prolific from the 12 yard spot, stepped up once again and slotted the ball home to have the final say.
From a disappointing campaign in many respects, the end of season has brought a lot of cause of optimism in the shape of some silverware and a good unbeaten run. Roll on next season !
