Chairman's Christmas Message

Chairman's Christmas Message image

A Christmas Message from Barry;

Dear Members of Footscray RUFC,

It's good to be sending my annual pre-Christmas update while games are still being played and we are not under a few feet of the white stuff. Long may it continue. We are at the mid point of the season so I thought it worthwhile to provide a summary of what's happened so far as we approach the year end.

  • The 1st XV have had a very mixed season with some great wins, including beating Orpington last weekend, but then some very surprising losses against the usual bottom teams, Bexley & Erith. This has unfortunately made their results look acceptable but left us in the bottom quarter of the table. We all had such high hopes this season after the way our results went after the snow cleared in the first half of 2011 but things haven't gone as planned. It's still better than this time last season when we had lost every game but still not where we want or deserve to be. I'm still confident that we can storm up the table again in the second half of the season.
  • On the other hand, the Ferrets have taken their league by storm winning every match bar one and sit proudly on top with 41 points from 11 games and a massive points difference of + 181. Well done to Dom and the guys.
  • Vaughanie Vet's have played 2 and won 2 so are the top performing side with a 100% record so far!! It's great to get a third team out again and we will be looking to continue that in 2012 with fixtures now being arranged on a regular basis. Thanks again to Gary for stepping up and taking the lead.
  • The coaching team has developed well with Dickie Bunton and Phil Greening co-ordinating the efforts even though the numbers turning up for training have not always been as high as we'd like. Phil is now doing some work with Plymouth Albion so comes to Footscray on a Thursday rather than Tuesday - include regular training as one of your new year resolutions as we are wasting good money on someone with Phil's experience if only a handful turn up when he is working with us.
  • Irish Chris has left us as Club Physio as his fitness venture in Chelsea has now taken off - we wish him well. We hope to announce a replacement for Chris in the near future.
  • The annual Memorial game is still planned for December 27th although we are currently short of opposition after Brocks cancelled earlier this week. We are urgently looking for a replacement team so keep a close eye on the club website for updates. We are also hoping to put out a Club side on December 31st against an opposition yet to be named - watch this space for information. Anyone wanting a game on either date should contact any of the team captains or simply turn up on the day with kit - we are always looking for players!!
  • Club social events have been very rare this season for a variety of reasons - Wormsie travelling was one of them! - but do try to get to the Club on New Years Eve where a themed evening is again planned; contact Jane or Steve Monaghan for details. The theme this year is London Underground Stations - it may sound difficult but when you start looking at the stations quite a few are easy to do, Angel (speaks for itself), High Barnet (wear a beehive wig), dress as a bear and come as Paddington etc. Tickets are available from the bar at £5 in advance, or £7 on the night. Kids come free so no baby-sitting excuses.

Let me finish by thanking all of you for your support for Footscray this season. A lot of us put significant effort in behind the scenes to make the club what it is and to help take it forward both on and off the field. Financially we are in a strong position, we continue to attract new players, we enjoy great facilities and have a coaching team that many senior clubs would be proud of. Do please all play your part by supporting the efforts of the players, whatever the results, and by volunteering to take on the many thankless tasks that are necessary to keep the club progressing.

Best wishes to you and your families for a great Christmas and a happy, healthy and successful 2012.

Hoorah the Club.
