This is a special club and this season is a pivotal one; solidifying our place in Counties 3 is the first step towards building success for years to come
- Jamie Kitchener, 1stXV Captain

There is a new captain at Fortress Cray. Jamie Kitchener has been appointed as 1st XV captain and will lead the team during this exceptionally important Season.

Jamie succeeded former skipper Kelvin Munroe, whose leadership during and after the Covid pandemic was instrumental for ensuring the survival of the squad. We thank him for this, and are pleased he’s continuing to represent. As for Jamie, he is ready and focused on getting the most out of this new experience.

Jamie, how was the team ahead of last Saturday’s debut in Kent Counties 3?

I would say a mix of excitement and anticipation, but definitely positive. I think the key is that we’ve discussed realistic targets, we know what we can achieve in this league and we know we want to go about achieving it. We want to be playing the best teams and I believe that we have a rightful spot in Counties 3, so it’s up to us to go and prove that.

What you expect from this Season in terms of League competition and rugby quality?

There are no easy games in this league, its as simple as that. At a minimum, teams are going to be well-drilled and physical – as a group of players we need to relish that challenge. I expect home points will be the focus for most teams, so if there is a side that is able to travel well and pick up points on the road also then that will heavily influence the final league standings.

Best teams out there?

Again, there are strong sides wherever you look in this league but it’s hard not to mention the likes of Blackheath and OEs due to their pedigree. A few of these teams we’ve played against for some years now, so we know that they each present different challenges. Our focus will remain on our own game plan, regardless of the opposition. If we play our own game then we will present our own problems which teams will need to try and solve.

What you think may be the threats and where you see opportunities?

Without doubt, this season presents a huge opportunity for us. We have an exciting mix of experienced, quality players with some new guys who have genuine raw talent. Not only are we in a transition phase from a players perspective, but our coach is also implementing a style of play which is contrast to the traditional Footscray way. If everyone buys into that, then the potential of this group is phenomenal. Our biggest challenge is going to be the lack of strength in depth of certain positions - this is something we need to navigate throughout this year. I’m sure others clubs will have to adapt in the same way, as two seasons on we are still feeling our way out of the new-normal.

How is it to be appointed captain of this team, especially in this pretty key period of the Club’s history?

It’s a privilege for sure. This is a special club and this season is a pivotal one; solidifying our place in Counties 3 is the first step towards building success for years to come. Being honest, there are a number of natural leaders in this group who all contribute in a big way so I feel it’s very much a joint effort. Those guys will play an equally important role this year and I’m thankful for their support.

What you expect from the players?

Self-belief and commitment. We’ve had a good pre season but the late confirmation of our place in Kent Counties 3 meant we have only managed 1 pre-season fixture. We need minutes on the pitch to allow our new combinations to gel and for us to grow into the new system - but if the players are focused and ready then we can start the season at the pace and intensity that we intended.

What you expect from Coaches and the Club?

I think the coaching is exceptional, Enrico has brought a completely different philosophy and ethos to the club which has already had hugely positive impacts. The club itself is also fantastic, both in terms of the physical infrastructure in the clubhouse and the training facilities, and also the people who are involved in the day to day running of the club. Their effort and commitment is second to none and something that I expect us as players to emulate on the pitch.

Why you think someone should join Footscray RUFC?

Because genuinely anyone can. The people here (players, coaches, clubmen) will welcome someone who is completely new to the game in equal to someone who is an experienced rugby player. Whether you’re looking to play regularly or just looking for fitness and skills training after work in the evening - everyone plays a role and everyone is valued.
