Sunday 17th May saw Frickley Academy Under 10s at the JJ Leisure Cup Finals Day played at Balby Carr Academy of Sport where they finished runners up.

In the league knockout stages Frickley made a cracking start, scoring in the first few minutes of their first game against Armthorpe as good work by Jake Kirkham was finished off by James Kirkham. Frickley then held out for their first win and 3 points.

The second game was against Mangham and Frickley suffered their only defeat losing 1-0 after the defence did not react fast enough to a shot that came back off the post. Adam Woollard and Ellis Caton excelled and were unlucky to be on the losing side.

The third game saw Frickley dominate the exchanges but could not convert their chances with Billy Ratcliffe, Joe Brondel and Ellison Greene all going close in a 0-0 draw with Rossington.

Frickley’s last game against Edenthorpe was the decider. With Mangham already into the final after being the only team unbeaten on the day it meant Edenthorpe needed a win to make the Final but a draw would be good enough for Frickley to do at Edenthorpe’s expense.

The first half of the game was even affair with Blake Askew, Bailey Williamson and Alex McDermott defending tight. Then as Edenthorpe started to gamble in the second half they left gaps for Frickley to expose. With a minute remaining Kendall Howcroft won the ball on the half way, beat 2 players and then split the Edenthorpe defence with a precise ball to send James Kirkham through one on one and he made no mistake by rifling into the top right hand corner. The 1-0 win meant Frickley progressed through to the final against Mangham.

No one gave Frickley a chance in the Final especially when they went 1-0 behind in the first half. Stan Armit half punched a corner out only for Mangham to fire it home. Frickley came out fighting in the second half though and some great play by Max Ludewig and James Kirkham led to Jake Kirkham equalising with the Final ending 1-1 and going to a penalty shoot out.

However, Frickley went on to lose the shoot out 5-3 with Max Ludewig being the unfortunate one to miss after Ellis Catton, James Kirkham and Billy Ratcliffe had converted.

Coach Darren Greene praised every one of his players saying, “It is an outstanding achievement how far this team has come this season. All the teams we played today, we lost to in the league season, but today we were better than them all.”
