Carlton 2 Frickley 2
It's raining, men.....
Given the often esoteric & whimsical nature of these match reports, it seemed appropriate that the nice lady off of Sat Nav directed me to Arnold Lane en route to Carlton.
Given the subject matter of the song, it also seemed appropriate that we were playing in Nottinghamshire.....
The good looking member of the Media Trio told me that Carlton have conceded the least but scored the least in our league - so clearly a high scoring draw, with both sides looking like they could score at will, was on the cards.
Fabian Bailey came back into the starting 11, but that aside it was the same team as Saturday.
Note much to report from the initial forays but the Greens had a good move after 20 minutes, good work from Gav set up Haze but he couldn't get enough purchase on his shot & it went wide. The pivotal moment of the half for Frickley came on the half hour when Stevie Hopewell stayed down after a 50/50 tackle & had to be helped from the field & he was replaced by Josh Nodder. Carlton started to attack more after that & a goal was inevitable & it came right on half time. Slightly before the goal however Haze 'scored' off the underside of the bar but the liner gave it offside - let's just say that everyone could see he was onside & leave it at that....
HALF TIME - CARLTON 1 FRICKLEY 0
Within 5 minutes of the restart it was 2 nil Carlton from the penalty spot after Sebba was adjudged to have brought an attacker down - Sebba got a yellow - Frickley were looking down the gun barrel at this point.
2 minutes later & we're back in it. Good work from Gav, feeds Jack Burton as he bursts into the box, one touch to control it, one touch to score with it - lovely goal.
The end to end stuff continued & it really was a thrill a minute game despite the horrid weather & Gav nearly equalised after a defensive air shot which the Big Man ran on to & took it to the bye line but his shot ran across the face of the goal, inches from the line.
Duggie came off to be replaced by Matt Overton.
2 apiece on 70 minutes, corner comes in & after a bit of penalty box pinball Haze stabbed it home. Evostik site said it was Jammer but we asked Haze & he said it was it - we realise that this is not the most definitive, sophisticated research ever done....
With time running out Frickley were denied the most clear cut penalty you will ever see - even if you live to be 3000 years old - Gav chopped down in the box as he was going to pull the trigger. You can only assume the ref was dazzled by the ultra bright Carlton floodlights.....ahem.
Both sides continued to attack until the final whistle - the best of which was good set up work for a Nods special which the keeper palmed over.
FINAL SCORE - CARLTON 2 FRICKLEY 2
WEBMASTER MOTM - easy, Sebba. Despite the penalty award, he pulled off any number of quality saves - just the standard that we've come to expect from him. I saw a tweet from a Carlton fan which said "the away keeper is a freak, way too good for this league" or words to that effect.
Attendance was 138 with about half of them from South Elmsall
Next up - away at Sheffield FC in the FA Trophy on Saturday - see you there
