Frickley 2 Stamford 0
What we learnt yesterday......
1) we don't need to create 30 chances to win a game
2) Stamford, much like the Fuzzy Wuzzies, don't like it up 'em!
As Britain battened down the hatches to prepare for Storm Brian, Frickley battened down the defensive hatches & unleashed Storm Frost to blow away Stamford. With Jammer & RPatts serving 1 match suspensions, Cameron Hough made his league debut & Darkenbauer started. Danny Frost came into the squad & was on the bench.
After 12 minutes a rare sighting, Frickley being awarded a penalty - perhaps the presence of legendary whistleman Barry Lamb in the stands inspired the ref to get a few decisions right - Steve Hopewell dragged to the floor (yet again) & Haze steps up to send the keeper the wrong way for his 13th of the season which was to prove unlucky for Stamford.
To be fair to both sides, the outriders of Storm Brian killed the game as a footballing spectacle from the get go - as soon as the ball left the deck it was a lottery as to whether (weather! I'm here all week) you got a gust or a gale. However the weather didn't stop the Big Man - lovely footwork took him into the box & his shot went just wide. Next up a well delivered corner from Nodds was met by a header from Gav but the keeper held it. Then 3 half chances in the same (wind affected) move but the ball just wouldn't sit down & it ended up with Nodds having a bang from the edge of the box, just wide.
Frickley adapted their play to the conditions, especially dead ball situations - Nodder driving his corners in low & Darkenbauer swapped his exocets for Dambusters.
HALF TIME - FRICKLEY 1 STAMFORD 0
We were presented with a similar chance to the one that SPS got against us on Tuesday - raking ball through by Darkenbauer, keeper made a mess of the clearance & it dropped to Nodder but his long range shot was diverted wide by Brian.
Just after the hour, Shinner Hopewell was replaced by Danny Frost (more of him later) - excellent shift again by Steve, & Nodder came off & was replaced by Duggie.
The home goal was largely unthreatened although Sebba made a sharp save down to his right (of course he did) as Fab, Grant & Cameron & the defensive midfield work of Darkenbauer organised themselves excellently.
After 85 minutes, a long ball out of defence, flicked on by Gav & Danny Frost is through on goal - The Iceman buries it & comes down to celebrate with his adoring fans in the main stand. For some reason the Stamford bench don't like it & it all kicks off - punches are thrown & Teddy Bloor gets stamped on twice. Dear visitors, if you think that's OK, take a long hard look at yourselves. The match was kindly sponsored by our good friends Ramsdens Solicitors who must have been rubbing their hands thinking GBH charges would need representation but the ref booked Frosty (for some reason) & a number of the Stamford bench (for every reason)
The Blues saw out the game for a 2 nil win despite constant provocation. Excellent game management by Frickley today, similar to Gresley & Spalding
FULL TIME - FRICKLEY 2 STAMFORD 0
WEBMASTER MOTM - mentions throughout the team, I've already called it for the defense & Darker, Big Gav & Shinner was a constant thorn up front & Danny Frost looked sharp when he came on but the Glitterball goes to Grant Allott. He did his defensive job without any fuss & was constantly giving out orders & organising the troops around him & in front of him.
230 through the gate - thanks to everyone who came to support us
Next up, we're away to Ashton next Saturday in the FA Trophy
Player updates - Bailey Gooda's loan spell has ended & he has returned to Harrogate & Carl Stewart has left the club. Carl scored 3 goals this season, his early goal against Spalding being particularly important. We wish them both the very best.
