Frickley Athletic 0-1 Marine
Brad Grayson missed a second half penalty and both sides finished with ten men as Marine grabbed a 1-0 win to leave the Blues two points from safety.
Peter Rinkcavage brought on-loan midfielder Cecil Nyoni into the midfield with Danny Walsh having to be content with a place on the bench alongside the Blues’ other new signing Craig Nelthorpe.
The game was a tight affair with few clear cut chances for either side. Marine had the first effort of any note after 11 minutes when a quickly taken free-kick saw Neil Harvey meet a low cross from the right at the near post but his effort went wide. Harvey sprinted shoulder to shoulder with Mark Gray after 25 minutes but then lifted his angled shot high and wide of the goal.
Nick Rogan then dragged an 18 yard shot across the face of goal after a swift Marine attack two minutes later.
The Blues put the Marine goal under serious threat for the first time on 35 minutes. Brad Grayson sprinted after a long clearance with Marine goalkeeper Callum Williams sprinting out to get enough on the ball to force him wide. Grayson then cut back across the edge of the box and was brought down just outside the penalty area. James Ashmore stepped up to clip the free-kick just wide of the left hand post.
Grayson was involved again on 41 minutes as he picked out Nyoni on the right of the box but his cross-cum-shot just evaded the onrushing Grant Darley and rolled agonisingly wide of the far post.
On 51 minutes a deep cross from the Marine right was headed down for Nick Rogan who blasted over the bar from 15 yards.
Harvey then seized on a slip from Stuart Ludlam to slice an 18 yard shot wide of the left hand post.
On 57 minutes Ben Turner played a ball over the Marine defence for Grayson who was pushed over from behind by Paul Lundon. After a delay for both Lundon and Robbie Lawton, who repeatedly contested the decision, to be cautioned Grayson stepped up to take the penalty which Williams saved to his left.
This visibly encouraged the visitors who went close four minutes later when a partly cleared free-kick was played back into the box by Rogan for Jonathan Goulding to see his 12 yard shot blocked by Stephen Dickinson.
The Blues threw on Danny South and Nelthorpe for Grayson and Darley in an attempt to win the game but Marine scored what proved to be the winner on 75 minutes when Harvey’s 20 yard shot ricocheted off Ludlam and fell kindly for Rogan who hit an angled shot across Dickinson and into the far corner of the net from 18 yards.
Nelthorpe’s time on the pitch lasted just 9 minutes as he needlessly lunged in on Harvey and was deservedly sent off. Marine’s Lundon followed him after receiving a second yellow card in the fracas that followed. Nyoni and South were cautioned for Frickley.
The defeat leaves the Blues desperate for wins now to stand any chance of avoiding relegation.
