Frickley 5 Athersley Rec 1
When the Blues go marching on.....
Athersley at home, on paper, looks to be a fairly straight forward game for Frickley. But A) football isn't played on paper & B) we've not been on top form in the 2 games prior to that........so Athersley could have been a potential 'nana skin.
Gav & Duggie moved to the bench with JB & Lewis Szanto coming in & Stone Cold Steve Hopewell took on the role of flying wingback.
The Blues created an early chance, with Frosty (the Patron Saint of Chasing Lost Causes) motored on to a ball he had no right to get anywhere near, nipped it round the keeper but it took him wide & the ball was cleared for a corner. The corner came to Szanto who showed some decent skill to turn & get his shot off but the keeper saved comfortably.
Both sets of pugilists sparred & jabbed with each other, mainly in centre ring, for the first 25 minutes or so but then Haze chipped a lovely ball into the box & it was fed inside to Danny Frost. The keeper saved his first effort but the Iceman Cometh with his 2nd attempt. Frostys 6th goal in 8 appearances.
Good approach play by Les Bleus set up Jacob Hazel on the edge of the box & his shot was well saved by the keeper & out for a corner. But in a repeat the ball ended up at his feet again & this time it ended up in the back of the net. Now the Dubious Goals Committee sat up long into the night & worked through the day & initially awarded it to Frosty but after hours & hours of watching it back on Super SloMo it has now been officially awarded to Haze, & that was his 22nd of the season (despite my recent confusion over the numbers, I am an accountant after all) & the 11th game on the bounce that he has scored in - some player.
HALF TIME - FRICKLEY 2 ATHERSLEY 0
Half time subby - Duggie came on for Stone Cold & 10 minutes later Big Gav replaced Szanto.
Just after the hour, Haze made it 3 nil, 23 for him this season & 47 career goals with a quality goal - forgive the paucity of reporting here but I was in the lavatory (caught with my trousers down literally & metaphorically) HOWEVER you can watch all the goals here or via the Frickley Athletic TV You Tube channel.
Duggie had 2 great chances to score in the same move but the keeper pulled off 2 worldies, he was reminiscent of Shiva, the many armed Indian God, but.......
Shortly after, a lovely goal, worth the money in on its own; A) because of the quality of the interplay - see the goal here & watch JBs ball through to Gav & also Teddy Bloors running after setting the move in motion but mostly for B) the collectors item that is Duggies first competitive goal for the club! Here are his thoughts.
Haze had completed his work for the night & was replaced by Callum Doherty.
The visitors scored a deserved goal with 5 minutes left - Athersley gave it a go throughout & created more of a problem than Sheffield did in the previous round.
The Blues weren't done though - The Master got the ball out on the left, beat any number of defenders & smashed home his 102nd goal off the near post
FINAL SCORE - FRICKLEY 5 ATHERSLEY 1
A decent game, despite the one sided scoreline, well done to the visitors for playing their part - well worth The Lady Godiva entrance fee.
WEBMASTER MOTM - a good team display. Strong defensive play, especially Jam, gave Sebba a quiet night. Patts did the dirty work unseen & JB put a good shift in. Frosty was electric upfront again & Duggie did very well when he came on (plus THAT goal) but THE MANS SCORED 23 & IT'S EARLY DECEMBER, so another Glitterball for Mr Hazel
140 through the gate, thank you to everyone who attended including a good number of the Rec In Crew. Lovely to meet Athersleys official photographer again - check him out on Twitter @_TheSaturdayboy
Photo album courtesy of our very own Irish photographer, Jerry O'Bag - great work again Onion
Next up, we're away at Peterborough on Saturday - Ian Clarkson is running a coach, see the News Item on the main site for details if you're interested in going to the game
