Swallownest 1 Frickley 2
Ready Steady Cook
A swirling wind, a heavy bumpy undulating pitch, 6 players missing from the starting 11 on Saturday & an 'up for it' home team - all the ingredients were there for a cup (cake) surprise. Fortunately Swallownest weren't 'Mary Berry' enough to whisk together the result that would leave Frickley with a soggy bottom.
Missing from Saturdays starting 11 were Gavin (rested after his knock at Romulus) / Jake Turner, Reece Mc, Sam Liversidge & Tyler Walton (not eligible for this round) / Ben Algar (cup tied having played for Sheffield FC in a previous round - probably against us!!). Big Stan (more of him later) went in goal, Ishy D played at wing back, Cammy Hough started after recent injury & Lewis Szanto featured up top. The bench was Sam Race, Dotty & Aleksandr 'Star Man' Starcenko.
Frickley had all of the chances bar one in the first half, but neither keeper was particularly troubled. Cammy Hough & Duggie were linking well with each other down the left, & Ishy D & Rocksteady Teddy did similar down the right flank.
HALF TIME - 0-0
For all that the first half lacked, the 2nd half instantly made up for. Haze opened the scoring, taking his tally to 38 for the season which makes him joint second highest scorer in a season, post war (tied with Gordon Rose). The ball was cleared from the Frickley half & Haze let it drop over his shoulder, slight control on his chest & then hit it on the volley from about 30 yards out - sweet finish.
5 minutes later, Swallownest achieved parity as the defence lost concentration & the home team were level.
Plenty more midfield endeavour followed with both sides parrying & thrusting.
Cammy Hough was replaced by Sam Race & Teddy Bloor made way for Callum Dotty.
It looked for all the world that we were heading for extra time (which everyone was looking forward to.....) until a Darkenbauer exocet was cleared to Haze & his shot was handled in the box. Duggie steps up & sticks the spot kick away with great aplomb under pressure.
Not vintage by Frickley, but good enough & we now play Shaw Lane in the semi final, date TBC
WEBMASTER MOTM - everyone played well enough but the Glitterball goes to Stan. Stepped in as Jake Turner was unavailable, & was carrying a bit of a knock too, received extensive treatment in the 2nd half but still got up & did his job & was ready to play another 90 minutes at the final whistle. They don't make many like him!!
120 through the gate - vast numbers from South Elmsall, we thank everyone that travelled.
Next up, Peterborough Sports at the Wezziecana on Saturday - hopefully see you there
