VP Newsletter – Mid November 2009
Greetings. This newsletter is the third in the never ending saga that is Frome Rugby Club.
If you no longer wish to receive newsletters or there's someone to add to the mailing list, please email me the email address.
Mid November sees our first team continuing to press for promotion but missing out on top spot by point’s difference. Well done to coaches players and supporters.
Sponsorship
Well done to Gregg Bird and his team in obtaining sponsorship for our latest project, the lights for the second pitch. Apart from Dairy Crest and Will Pearn Tree Services the club is grateful to Cobb Farr for a generous contribution as well as 8 Bonds amounting to £800 from anonymous donors.
To remind you of the sums; the Rugby Football Union is awarding £23,000 to Frome RFC and we have to find £17,420 locally. That’s a pretty good deal, but a lot of hard work for individuals in the Club and for supporters in difficult financial times. The new lights should enable players, whether adult or younger, to train in the dark winter months. A great enhancement to facilities and I can only commend the commitment of our committee and others rising to this challenge.
Women's Rugby
Frome RFC continues to support rugby for women and girls. The club has agreed to promote a women’s team (over 17) and the first training session will be Sunday 3rd January 2010 which will be led by Ruth Massey, an experienced player and coach. Please encourage all females over 17 to come along and join in the fun.
We are currently preparing an advertisement for display so please encourage this endeavour.
Financial General Meeting
I referred to this in my last Newsletter and, as you’d expect, there’s been intense media interest in the outcome of the FGM.
I expected Dave Winduss to report that he’d like to trade in his honorary club helicopter for a more comfortable one and ask that the bronze bust of him and the chairman be moved closer to the bar. I thought there might be the cut and thrust of debate about which hole in the hedge Frank Midwinter comes through or the culpability of the sponging bankers and big city bonuses but no.
My expectations were dashed by a somber meeting at which our accountant, Paul Treby of Tenon, said there are many pages to his report which are available to anyone requesting them. He said the club is well run and praised the hard working staff at the club.
In his address, Treasurer Dave Winduss didn’t unfortunately answer the burning question about his tactical walk when playing for the Cavalry so that mystery will remain until next year.
Events
The next VP lunch is Saturday 12th December and the Frome Churches have agreed to repeat their highly successful and acclaimed visit to FRFC in which there will be festive singing and seasonal enjoyment. Last year was enjoyed by all so don’t miss it!
Watch this space for more information and put the date in your diary.
On the 6th December there will be a Christmas Fayre (not the same as a Christmas fairy which has a tree up its rear). Lots of appropriate goodies will be on sale so come along and join in.
Christmas Eve there will be festive entertainment. If you need to know the date of this event, ask the bar staff.
On Boxing Day there will be a karaoke and everyone will be competing for the Bill Griggs trophy for volume as well as melody.
New Years Eve will be an evening of entertainment by ‘Best Before Midnight’ which will be for adults only.
The Mocking Birds Farewell Performance is, not surprisingly, sold out.
For the Youngsters
A children’s Christmas party will be held Sunday 13th December from 1.00 till 3.00 and tickets will be available from the bar price £2.00.
Are you able to donate raffle prizes, please? The club would welcome contributions.
Twickenham (here we go, here we go)
Following the successful trip to Twickers earlier this year, the club has decided to repeat the exercise next spring. However great dismay has been expressed because the Eastleigh Princess, piloted by Captain Lovatt, will not be used for the 2010 trip. Apparently Boris Johnson says that emissions from the Eastleigh Princess do not meet his requirements. We think he means the bus not the passengers.
The RFU has published what it calls its core values which, I think, encapsulate the ideal that is Rugby Union:-
Teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline, sportsmanship.
General
Thank you and well done to the group of mature gentlemen who sell our match day programmes. Very much appreciated if not quite as attractive as some of the previous sellers.
Unfortunately I’m not aware of many responses to my ad in the last newsletter inviting applications to sell raffle tickets. It has been decided to re-advertise this post so, if you’ve already sent in your CV we shall continue to consider you.
Unsung Hero
My nomination for unsung hero is the excellent Bill Griggs. He has worked tirelessly for the club and I remember his steady hand on the tiller when he chaired the minis and juniors. He was always an enthusiastic coach and knew from experience what was going on in the front rows. I’ve always appreciated his comments, even the less polite ones, and his love of the game shines through.
Finally
The opinions expressed here are mine and not necessarily those of Frome RFC. I welcome comment, corrections and content but, to quote Paul Holdaway, 'errors and omissions are just that'.
