The Frome RFC 1st XV travelled to high flying Sherborne RFC on Saturday looking to follow on from the strong displaiy away at Marborough a few weeks previous (the heavy snow postponing last weekends home fixture).

A tough, physical encounter was set with Frome looking to dominate across the park with the forwards taking the lead in the boggy conditions.

Carries from Second Row Phil Meenan and Hooker Will Button got the visitors on the front foot giving the back line opportunities through the partnership of Scrum Half John Benstead and Fly Half Matt King.

The scrum from the Frome pack continued to dominate as it did in Marlborough a few weeks previous with the resigning of Elliott Bowler firming up the Front Row.

Sherborne always looked dangerous with ball in hand and it were able to score early catching Frome napping. (7-0)

The large portion of the game was played in Sherbornes half and the territory and momentum would build eventually to see No.8 Alex Mallon crash his way through several would be tacklers and cross the line, unfortunately from wide James Howard couldn’t convert and the extras went missing. (7-5)

In the remainder of the game Frome continued to press, looking the more likely to get the next points but to Sherbornes credit their defence held strong and kept the visitors out.

Final Score: Sherborne RFC 1st 7 - 5 Frome RFC 1st

Frome RFC Head Coach commented “This was another one that somehow got away. Aside from conceding a sloppy try in the opening minutes and one or two fleeting breakaway opportunities, this was a completely dominant performance. Unfortunately, for all our possession and territorial advantage, we were unable to carve out many clear-cut scoring opportunities of our own. Sherborne's defence was aggressive and dogged, and we just couldn't break them down. We were relying on a refereeing decision or bit of luck to go our way in the closing minutes, and neither was forthcoming. We need to learn how to determine the outcome ourselves. There's plenty for us to work on and we're far from the finished article, but this is a team with inexhaustible character and determination. That's a great foundation on which to build and the squad deserve enormous credit for another determined, courageous and industrious performance. Though they've finished with narrow losses, our two recent encounters with teams competing for promotion have underlined that we're a match for anyone in the league. This group of players has a bright future.”

On Saturday Frome RFC 1st welcome North Dorset RFC 1st to Gypsy Lane in a rearranged fixture following the heavy snow fall two weeks ago.
