Frome RFC 2nd 11 - 16 Sutton Benger RFC 1st
Frome RFC 2nds 9 match winning streak was stopped in a close encounter at Gyspy Lane on Saturday
After some superb wins on the trot Frome RFC 2nd XV welcomed 2nd place Sutton Benger RFC 1st to Gypsy Lane on Saturday, the side sitting just one place above them in Dorset & Wilts 2 North.
Sutton Benger started well with Frome defending deep within their own half. The home sides defence was solid despite Sutton Benger trying to get the ball out wide and strong runs from their big pack. It was the visitors who were on the scoreboard first following an Frome infringement allowing Sutton Benger to gain the lead with a penalty on the frome 22. (0-3)
Rarely Frome had ball in hand, but when they did they used it well and almost carved out a number of try scoring opportunities with the last pass letting them down. Sutton Benger managed to pick up one more penalty near the end of the fist half to extend their lead. (0-6) Frome responded with a penalty in the Sutton Benger 22 with Winger Luke Stanley slotting the kick. (3-6)
Half Time: Frome RFC 2nd 3 - 6 Sutton Benger RFC 1st
Frome started the second half well with a mazy run from Winger Ben Tiley drawing in the defence to release Outside Centre Chris Burgess who went in for Frome's first try of the day. Unfortunately the kick was missed. (8-6)
Sutton Benger responded well and, with quick play, earned themselves a reply with another penalty. (8-9)
Frome continued to pressure the visitors and had more of the ball and the upper hand late into the second half. Strong forward play resulting in pressure led to a Frome penalty on the Sutton Benger 10 meter line, this allowed Luke Stanley to give his team the slightest of lead with only 5 minutes to go. (11-9)
From a Frome lineout in the opposition 22 but Sutton Benger were given a free kick and they cleared their lines and the pressure was now on in the Frome 22. Frome defended well and earned themselves a penalty, with the final minutes on the clock they chose to tap and keep it tight. In a build up of possession the ball found its way to Luke Stanley who broke down the wing but was halted with a questionable tackle resulting in the ball being spilt. With calls from the supporters of a high tackle Sutton Benger responded quickest to broken play and kicked the ball through to score under the posts, the kick being added. (11-16)
Frome only had 2 minutes to score from the kick off and forced the knock on. Constant Forward pressure saw Frome get within 5 meters of the try line. The ball went wide and an unfortunate knock on during a penalty advantage saw the final whistle blown.
Final Score: Frome RFC 2nd 11 - 16 Sutton Benger RFC 1st
Man of the match went to Jordan Talbot.
Frome RFC 2nd XV Captain Garrie Webster commented "Proud of the players efforts against a massive pack. Never gave up and made a very good first team work for the win."
Frome stay in third position in Dorset & Wilts 2 North and travel away to play 4th place Nomads next weekend.
