Alfred's Nomads 3 - 23 Frome RFC 2nd

Frome RFC 2nd XV travelled to Marlborough RFC to face their 2nd XV 'Alfred's Nomads' who were sitting strong in the top 5 of the league having not lost in some weeks and put some big scores on their opposition.

Frome kicked off playing uphill against the wind and it was clear from the outset the Nomads would utilise there large Forwards and quick Back, pinning Frome into their own 22 for much for the first half. It was the home side who were first on the board following an offside infringement which allowed the Nomad's to kick for posts. (3-0)

The Nomad's continued to use the hill and their speedy backs and gained good territory. They recycled the ball quickly and earned another offside penalty within the Frome half, although Frome were let off as the kick went wide.

The Frome men regathered and began to challenge the home side, pressure amounted and it was long until Frome were awarded a penalty of their own which Winger Luke Stanley slotted with ease. (3-3).

Frome were starting to find their feet, and with renewed confidence, began to move the ball well. A lineout on the Nomad's 22 saw Flanker Matt Smith catch and distribute the ball well giving Scrum Half Jordan Harding good ball to release No.8 Jon Rivers on the opposition 10 meter line, and with trademark fashion, powered his way over to score the first try of the day. Unfortunately the conversion was missed (3-8)

The remainder of the first half was managed well by Frome, with some strong defence from Webster, Talbot and Centre Ben Tiley keeping the Nomad's back line at bay. The 5 point lead at half time put Frome in a very good position going into the second half.

Second Half: Alfred's Nomads 3 - 8 Frome RFC 2nd

Frome received the kick off in the second half and used the boot of Webster, to keep Nomads pinned into their own half. The Frome Forwards, who were dominant in both their scrums and line outs, used the good field position to their advantage and were awarded a Scrum 5 meters out thanks to a tackle on a Nomads player over their own try line by James Milton. Frome's Forward pack drove over the Nomad's line allowing No.8 Rivers to dive over for his second try of the day. The extras going wide. (3-13)

From the kick off Frome attacked well, Outside Centre James Gallop challenged the line and put a put a kick through to put Frome down in the Nomad's half again. A good defensive lineout allowed Flanker Smith to steal the ball. A penalty saw Frome opt for the scrum 20 meters from the try line. Another outstanding scrummage saw the Frome pack drive 15 meters to the line. The ball eventually popped out the back of the scrum and Jordan Talbot, who was now playing Scrum Half, reacted quickest to dot the ball down over the try line. Unfortunately the kick was missed wide. (3-18)

Another dominant scrum led by Front Row of Bowler, Granville and Horne saw Nomads driven back. This allowed clear ball out to the visiting back line and after a number of controlled phases Rivers powered his way over for his hat trick for the last try of the day. (3-23)

Frome's defence and discipline continued to be excellent for the remainder of the game. A perfect example of outstanding commitment and effort was when Frome prop Jason Barraclough, who has just come back from a long term injury, put in an outstanding tackle on the opposition fullback out wide, preventing a decent counterattack.

Full Time: Alfred's Nomads 3 - 23 Frome RFC 2nd

This was the perfect response following the narrow defeat to Sutton Benger RFC 1st last week and puts Frome in prime position to challenge the top 2 for promotion. Frome RFC 2nd now face a weeks break before facing Melksham RFC 2nd at home.
