Frome RFC 2nd 48 - 26 Melksham RFC 2nd
Frome RFC 2nd XV welcomed Melksham RFC 2nd XV to Gypsy Lane on Saturday...
Frome RFC looked to continue their good run of form when they welcomed Wiltshire side Melksham RFC 2nd to Gypsy Lane on Saturday and it was the visitors that got off to the better start with some strong carries from their Forwards and their Backs showing the pace that would cause trouble for Frome all game.
As always Frome's mobile pack caused trouble for the visitors with lots of strong running and quick ball resulting in Stuart Elliott and Jason Barraclough going over for their first tries. Both conversions missed by Fullback John Spencer who had an uncharacteristic bad day with the boot.
Frome then went a man down after the referee believed to have seen a punch showed a red card to Prop Gordon Grierson, despite disbelief by the Frome and Melksham players. The visiting player later speaking to the referee and said as much which is a great sign of sportsmanship and integrity.
The game ebbed and flowed with Frome's defence holding well against some strong attacks whilst picking up another 2 scores from Stevan Randall with a burst of power and pace from the Scrum to go over from 5 metres out. Barraclough got another from good forwards play as he received a short pass from the hard working Owen Davies to power over with a majestic dive.
Melksham got back with a try and conversion after taking advantage of some quick ball and their back linecut through the midfield to score under the posts.
A response was immediate as Frome scored from the first attack after the kick off and quick hands from Fly Half Luc Thomas to Captain Garrie Webster who offloaded to Ben Tiley for him to show great pace and pass the cover defence for a try under the posts.
The Second Half had Frome defending for large periods with Melksham taking advantage of their extra man and attacking Frome's stretched defence outside and their Winger completing a Hat trick of tries.
Frome showed the resolve and team spirit that has seen them climb the table to pressure the top 2 teams by picking up further scores from Winger Jordon Harding, Flanker James Milton from a quick tap penalty catching a sleeping defence and Fly Half Luc Thomas scoring after Prop Dom Granville blazed a trail down the wing only to be caught by a last gasp tackle but showed great awareness to offload in contact to the supporting Fly Half.
Final Score: Frome RFC 2nd 48 - 26 Melksham RFC 2nd
Man of the Match: Stuart Elliott
We caught up with Captain Webster after who commented "I'm very happy with the teams grit to pull off a great win despite being a man down and would like to give thanks to the large crowd that cheered them on."
