WINNING STREAK COMES TO AN END.
On the weekend of The Beast from the East 2.0, Frome RFC 2nd XV made the trip to 2nd place Calne RFC 1st expecting a tough encounter. Frome needed to take all the points to keep promotion hopes within their grasp but it wasnt to be.
Playing in freezing conditions as the storm moved in, the home team started strongly and put their large Forward Pack into action in what was to be their game plan for the day. Their big runners made gradual progress in the face of some ferocious defence from Captain Garrie Websters men but forced the Frome men to infringe too many times resulting in easy yards from the boot of the Calne Fullback.
The first try of the game came from sustained pressure by the pack and when the ball eventually made its way out to the backs, Calne found a gap in the stretched defence to touchdown. The conversion was succesful. (7-0)
This spurred the Frome men into action as they had their own period of possession which only some dogged defence and last gasp tackles prevented Frome getting on the score sheet.
Frome finally got their rewards when the hard working Second Row Owen Davies made a break down the middle with Jon Rivers in support, the ball went along the backs for Scott Hunter to show his skill when faced with a number of defenders, he deftly chipped the ball through and won the foot race to score in the corner. The conversion was missed. (7-5)
Half Time: Calne RFC 1st 7 - 5 Frome RFC 2nd
Calne got off to a slighlty fortuitous start to the 2nd half when the flyhalf kicked off. His kick unintentionally went straight down the middle of the pitch and ended up under Frome's posts. Frome were slow to react which resulted in a rushed clearance only just outside of the 5 metre line. From the resulting lineout the large Calne pack caught and drove for the line which Frome could do very little about. Conversion missed. (12-5)
The rest of the 2nd half was played out with Frome trying everything to score from all over the pitch but their difficulty in securing any clean ball from set piece made life difficult.
Final Score: Calne RFC 1st 12 - 5 Frome RFC 2nd
2nd XV Captain Garrie Webster commented "We knew this would be a big task. Calne are unbeaten at home this year and are pushing 1st place Sutton Benger RFC 1st all the way. We didnt exactly show fully what we are capable of today but that had alot to do with Calne preventing us from doing so. Special mention to a young man making his Senior debut today, Ben Eley. He stepped up in an important game and set an example for others by playing out of position. He should be proud of his performance and i'm sure he's one to watch for the future."
Man of the Match went to Owen Davies for his hard work in attack and tackle count.
Next Saturday Frome RFC 2nd XV welcome 7th place Colerne RFC 1st to Gyspy Lane.
