Frome RFC 2nd 71 - 7 Royal Wootton Bassestt RFC 3rd
Frome welcomed Royal Wotton Bassett 3s knowing that they would need to win their remaining matches for any chance of promotion.
Frome kicked off and instantly applied the pressure, keeping Royal Wootton Bassett pinned into their own half. Some strong rucking and quick ball allowed Frome to implement some well structured phases which saw the forwards assist Centre Jimmy Gallop to drive over in the corner for the first try of the day. Conversion missed (5-0)
Frome let their foot off the gas a bit but still managed to scored a second sooner after with Matt Smith cutting a hard line off of Frome Captain Garrie Webster to dive over. Conversion missed (10-0)
A series of mistakes, mainly at the breakdown allowed the visitors to kick for field position. After some excellent defence from Frome to win a lineout on their own 22, however Wotton Basset reacted quickest to the overthrow and bundled over for their first, and only try of the day. The conversion being successfully kicked (10-7)
Captain Webster reminded his team that this wouldn't be an easy game and asked for them to increase the tempo. Scrum Half Jordan Talbot took a quick tap penatly on the Opposition 22 and quick thinking by Webster saw him drive forward and score, catching the opposite team sleeping. Conversion missed (15-7) Another try by Smith followed with No.8 Stuart Elliott breaking a large number of tackles and commiting lots of defenders to set Smith free for a short sprint to the line. (20-7)
The next try came thanks to the hard running and support by the Frome forwards. With Prop Kieran Storey catching from the kick off and offloaded well to Front Row partner Gordon Grierson who broke through and had a two on one with Second Row Dean Marshall in supoort, the pass went to ground but was picked up well to score in the corner. (25-7)
Half Time: Frome RFC 2nd 25 - 7 Royal Wootton Bassett RFC 3rd
Frome knew they needed more scores incase promotion goes to point difference at the end of the season. With this in mind Frome upped the intensity and scored many tries this half. Dave Evans came on for his Second Team debut and scored with his first touch of the ball, picking up and driving over from close. Conversion successfully kicked by Luke Stanley (32-7)
Next try came from No.8 Elliott with a trademark strong run from the kick off drawing in a number of midfield players, Man of the Match Smith cut another great line and took the pass at pace to score under the posts. Conversion successful (39-7)
Centre Chris Burgess eventually got his reward for all his carries and ran a hard short line off Flyhalf Webster to break the line and outpace the defence to score. Conversion successful again by Stanley (46-7)
Frome didn't let complacency creep in and kept the pressure up, Royal Wotton Basset couldn't deal with the pace of intensity and were tiring. Burgess got his second try of the game having only come on at the start of the second half (51-7)
Winger Kurt Eckard found himself with the ball out wide on the opposition 5 meter and cut a good running line back in field to score with an outstretched arm. (56-7)
From the restart the ball found its way out wide on the wing where Matt Smith, future first team winger in training, showed his electric pace to score under the posts. (61-7) It's felt a little bit like ground hog day as Smith popped up again, this time on the righthand wing, to finish off a decent move with a mixture of offloads and hands. (66-7.) Jordan Talbot got the final score after chasing a well weighted box kick by Jordan Harding to touch down. (71-7)
Finals Score: Frome RFC 2nd 71 - 7 Royal Wootton Bassett RFC 3rd
Captain Garrie Webster commented "I am very happy with the result as Royal Wootton Bassett brought a large squad in number and size! The speed of our play was too much for them!"
An outstanding win by Frome RFC 2nds which keeps the pressure up on the teams above them.
