Frome RFC 2nd 30 - 12 Swindon College Old Boys RFC 2nd
Frome RFC 2nd sign off season with a win and send off Captain Webster in style...
It was a hot, sunny afternoon with Swindon College Old Boys kicking off. The home team started well and, after a period of possession, gave Captain Garrie Webster the ball with some space to work with, a decent step saw him break the line to only be stopped by a last gasp tackle. The visitors played with energy and intensity early on and were on the front foot in attack, they kept Frome pinned deep within their own half for much of the first half. A decent kick to touch from a Frome infringement saw the opposition have a line out 5 meters from the line. A solid catch and drive led to SCOB's first try of the match. (0 - 5)
Frome responded well and gave more going forward. The forwards started to secure the ball more around the breakdown and gave Frome Scrum Half Jordan Talbot clean ball to build phases with. From resultant quick play earned a penalty on the opposition 22 for offside. Fullback Ben Eley showed composure to slot the penalty. (3 - 5)
Despite SCOB battering the Frome line for the remainder of the first half they scored no further points. The home team worked hard in front of a bumper crowd, and knew the low score would give them a platform to build on for the second half.
Half time Frome RFC 2nd 3 - 5 Swindon College Old Boys RFC 2nd
The first try of the second half came when Frome cleared their lines with a kick into the opposition half. The visitors Fullback caught the ball but found himself under pressure from the chasing line. With the resulting ruck and quick thinking from Captain Webster he was able to scoop up the ball and run in unchallenged, with a large cheer coming from the home crowd, unfortunately the Conversion was missed. (8 - 5)
Frome allowed themselves to fall asleep from the kick off and Swindon’s second, and final try of the game, was scored when the ball was fed wide to their backline, the Frome defence failed to mobilise quickly enough. Conversion successful (8 - 12)
Talbot launched an outstanding box kick deep into the visitors half which found touch giving Frome good field position to defend from. Good pressure from Winger Luke Stanley resulted in his try when the visiting Fullback attempted a quick lineout and the loose ball was chipped through for Stanley to score. Ben Eley with the conversion. (15 - 12)
Eley got another penalty to extend Frome's lead further. (18-12) Frome still had more to offer and a score from Scrum Half Talbot was next. (23-12) but to secure the maximum 5 points and keep the push on promotion. It was Jon Rivers who was able to add to the score sheet who, with great strength took a crash ball on the opposition 22 and bulldozed his way through 2 players to roll over the line to score. Garrie Webster was forced to take the final conversion of the game, and with the most casual of techniques, slotted it from the touch line.
Final Score: Frome RFC 2nd 30 - 12 Swindon College Old Boys RFC 2nd
With other sores across the weekend Frome RFC 2nd finished 3rd in Dorset & Wilts 2 North - It was a fitting game to showcase just how far Frome 2nds have come this season. Having lost heavily to SCOB at the start of the season, Frome showed the grit and determination that has been the backbone to their success. It is through the intelligent captaincy of Garrie Webster that the team have gotten stronger and stronger. He has laid the foundation for Frome 2nds which is ladened with potential and for this we will be forever grateful.
2nd XV Captain Garrie Webster retires from playing following this season and the club would like to thank him for his continued dedication and hard work - having led the club as Club Captain for many season he has had a fantastic career seeing promotions and wins at Bath Rec ground.
