Melksham RFC 2nd 3 - 83 Frome RFC 2nd
Frome RFC 2nd XV made the trip to Melksham on Saturday....
Frome started the game in a characteristically strong manner. After some structured play and hard work the frome backs were able to get the ball through their hands out to Winger Luke Stanley who dotted down in the corner. Stanley popped up for the second try soon afterwards with the ball being whipped out wide for him to go over again.
On 12 minutes Winger Ben Tiley weaved his way through the opposition defence to score under the posts. The Frome back line were well on top and were thirsty for my tries. After a lack of structure due to the openness of the game Frome struggled to get back on the scoreboard immediately and had to wait until the 23rd minute for the next try. Flanker James Milton popped up on the right hand wing and, as usual, stepped a number of opposition players to score.
Frome gave a number of penalties away allow Melksham close enough to their posts that they chose to kick for goal. They managed to prevent it from being a “nil” game and kicked over well to add the 3 points.
The response was swift with frome Second Row Owen Davies sniffing out an opportunity by picking and going from the side of the ruck with Captain Dean Marshall latched to him, Davies bouncing off the Fullback to score.
The final score of the half game on 40 minutes with Outside Centre Kurt Eckard cutting a hard line, bulldozing his way over.
Frome started the second half with their manager Garrie asking them to play with more structure. This is exactly the result he got and it led to a selection of well worked tries. After some excellent “controlled” play, Frome worked their way up the pitch.
Dean Marshall cut an excellent line on Fly Half Ben Eley to run through the opposition defence unopposed and score under the posts.
The next try saw Ben Eley show some pace and strength to score 48-3. Loukas Ives, who was dominant in the scrum all day, managed to smash his way through on 51 minutes making it.
From kick off frome hooker Phil Clarke caught the ball and managed to sprint almost the entire length of the pitch until he was caught 5 meters from the line, only to offload to Davies allowing him to score his second try of the game.
In the last 15 minutes of the game the Frome backs ran rampant with Kurt Eckard getting 2 tries, both from outstanding hard lines, making it a hat trick of tries for him today. Ben Tiley got his second try of the game with a characteristic windy run to the line. 83-3
Final Score: Melksham RFC 2nd 3 - 83 Frome RFC 2nd
Captain Dean Marshall commented "To go away and win by 83 points is a huge statement to the league and credit to the players effort. No matter what team we put out, who we play, home or away, we will aspire to beat every team to the league title. We have Corsham 2nds at home next week, let’s keep this promotion train on track with another big win.
