Frome RFC 2nd XV welcomed Corsham RFC 2nd to Gypsy Lane on Saturday hoping to continue their uneaten record....
The Frome RFC 2nd XV welcomed their Corsham counterparts to Gypsy Lane on Saturday aiming to keep their unbeaten run in the Wadworth 6X Dorset & Wilts 2 north league and remain top of the table.
Frome started the better of the two teams and after some excellent ball retention and all round structure, Frome managed to work the space out wide to get ball through the backline to Centre to Ben Tiley who scored, the conversion was added by Fly Half Ben Eley.
Corsham utilised their powerful backs well and responded swiftly with a try of their own, the kick going just wide. Frome had the more dominant of the two packs and used them well to gain valuable field position.
No.8 Stuart Elliott made ground with a pick from the back of a scrum to dot the ball just short of the line, with Flanker James Milton finishing off the move to extend the lead. The kick being added
Frome continued to apply pressure to the Corsham defensive line and kept them pinned back well into their own half. After many phases and a few penalties Scrum Half Steven Morris drove over from close range to score.
The final try of the half saw Forward Stevan Randall make a powerful run and take a few defenders over the line with him as he stretched out to score.
Half Time: Frome RFC 2nd 28 - 5 Corsham RFC 2nd
Frome took an excellent lead into the second half and can be accused of taking their foot off the gas. Corsham capitalised off a number of penalties given away and managed to score only 5 minutes into the half.
Frome were trying to recoup but found themselves again makers of their own downfall. With a number of mistakes in open play allowing the speed of Corsham's backs to capitalise and score again.
Corsham were getting back into the game and Frome knew they needed to stop the rot. After retaining about 70% possession Frome managed to keep Corsham pegged back for the remainder of the half utilising their forwards well.
On the 75th minute Milton popped up to make victory and the bonus point a certainty. A trademark pick and go from the base of the ruck saw him shunted over the line to score.
With 5 minutes to go Corsham’s heads had dropped and Frome wanted more. An excellent run by Randall saw him offload to 2nd team debutante Rob Paten who sprinted to the line, shrugging off a few defenders in the process. This gave Frome quick ball and the ball was sent to the backs, and with time and space, saw good hands found Tiley who ran in to score his second of the day. Man of the Match: James Milton
