Frome RFC 2nd 31 - 29 Devizes RFC 2nd
Frome RFC looked to continue their great run of form when they welcomed a tough Devizes RFC 2nd on Saturday...
On Saturday Frome RFC 2nd welcomed Devizes RFC 2nd to Gypsy Lane looking to maintain their fantastic start to the season having won all games so far in league competition and sitting top of Wadworth 6X Dorset & Wilts 2 North.
From kick off Frome started positively and implemented their usual game plan. After a number of excellent forwards phases with solid structure No.8 Stuart Elliott crashed over. The home side had an early lead. Frome Fly Half Ben Eley, who was excellent with the boot all day, duly converted.
Devizes threatened with their backline well and this resulted in a well worked try in the corner, the conversion missed. Frome didn’t panic and knew they needed to hit back.
Birthday boy Hooker, Geoff Taylor replied with a try of his own. Excellent lines from the Frome backline gave the Forwards field position in the Devizes 22. A series of well supported plays saw Taylor run it in, under pressure, from 5 meters out. Try converted.
Devizes responded well and took the game to Frome pinning the side back with kicks with similar quick try’s scored out wide from counter attacks, trys scored on the 30th and 35th minute. This meant Frome went into half time behind for the first time this season.
Half Time Score: Frome RFC 2nd 14 - 17 Devizes RFC 2nd
Frome responded well after the break and Devizes struggled to hold back the attacking play. Sheer pace of Frome’s play pinned Devizes back into their 22 and produced some desperate defence. After giving away a number of penalties Scrum Half Steven Morris reacted quickest to snipe and score, try converted to take the lead.
Frome kicked into good field position for the next try and MOTM Flanker, Stevan Randall held off a number of tackles to dot down to extend the lead, try converted. Frome were beginning to break away and added to the score with a well taken penalty by Ben Eley, 31-17.
After a great start to the half Devizes hit back. Frome defended well for 10 minutes and thought the job was done when they had won the ball back over their try line. However a Devizes player was quick to act and dotted the ball down through the ruck.
Frome found themselves under pressure and camped inside their own 22 for the final 10 minutes of the game the defence held well in the centre of the park and forced Devizes to play wide and they found a gap in the corner to score bringing the score to 31-29, a successful conversion would level the game but the hard angle saw the Devizes Fly Half kick wide and Frome won the game with the small margin.
Final score: Frome RFC 2nd 31 - 29 Devizes RFC 2nd
Captain Dean Marshall commented "Devizes ran us close. This was by far the most difficult challenge we have had this season. The team did well to come back after half time and defended well to prevent Devizes from snatching the draw. This Devizes team had a large number of first team players coming back from injury, so this was an excellent result. Frome welcome 3rd place Westbury next Saturday which will be another “season defining” test.
Man of the Match: Steven Randall
