Date: Sunday 9th December 2012 - Kick Off: 11:00
Saracens Herts Middlesex Leagues - U14 Division 7
| Fullerians B | 24 | vs | 31 | Hackney Bulls |
This match like the one preceding it was a pleasure to watch, with both ourselves and Hackney playing the game at speed, and intensity. It started slowly, however, with both sides making gains but without any real penetration, and it looked like it was going to be a war of attrition. However it burst into life with Hackney taking first blood with a score that was as much about our errors as it was about their skill.
We bounced back strongly though through a combination of great forward play and finishing and we ended the first half 12-5 up, both of our tries were well takien and came as result of numerous phases of possession.
Our forwards worked really hard against a bigger and more mobile pack, and did more than hold their own, however as Iain and Tim pointed out we needed to be a lot more aggressive at the breakdowns where we were losing a lot of ball.
Some of the tackling by our backs was truly impressive , with all of the 3/4's making crunching tackles when required - this is an area that I have seen improve over the last weeks and is becoming an a real asset.
The second half was dominated by Hackney who used the ball really well , moving us from one side of the pitch to the other, and I have to say some of the offloads they made in the tackle were outstanding (akin to the AB's), but we never gave up, despite conceeding 3 tries. This was epitomised by Luke who upon seeing their winger on the other side of the pitch steaming towards the line, set off across the pitch and he tracked him back right to the line before bringing him down. A huge effort from one of our newer players and if ever the maxim of try-saving tackle was needed or meant, this was it...
Our one failing in that second half was a case of white line fever - we had numerous opportunities to score, but a combination of that fever, and some strong defending meant that we were unable to pull the scoreline back until the very last minute when Jake burst through in customary fashion leaving bodies in his wake, and run in under the posts.
The scoreline didn't reflect the huge effort and commitment given by all the boys, who never once let their heads drop and fought tooth and nail until the final whistle, and on a different day they would have come out winners, but well played Hackney, who are a good team, well managed and played with good heart and in the right manner.
