FULLERS VETS 17 EALING EVERGREENS 26
Another tough game this Saturday against Ealing with a last minute struggle for numbers, from 17 players on Wednesday evening we were down to 12 in the changing room before the match
Thanks to Christian Briancon, Grant Fear, Steve Hunt, Richard Poynter, Iain McGarvie, Jonny Miles, Bill Calcraft, Clyve Hancock, Simon Groves, Kevin Sorkin, Simon Lee and Jason Tse. However, after last minute negotiations with the 2nd's we were able to borrow Jamie O'Keefe and Adam Cartwright, making a fabulous 14.
The fact that we were a player short and Ealing were out training for 30 minutes before we even made it to the changing room did not deter us, Fullers started the better of the teams. with the game plan being keep the ball alive and try and avoid contact, these tactics seem to work with the ball being moved to the backs at every opportunity and Jamie O'Keefe and Simon Groves making in roads whenever they received the ball, this meant that Fullers were able to play the game in the opposition half, whenever Ealing looked to break out the Fullers defence stood firm, with fantastic defence from the back row of Iain, Jonny and Bill leading to numerous turnovers.
The first try for Fullers was great interplay between backs and forwards which drove the ball to the Ealing 22, quick ball was moved to the wing where Jason showed his pace to beat his opposite man on the outside and score under the posts, Jamie added the extras.
Ealing came back at Fullers, however, the Fullers defence held firm, giving no time to the opposition players which led to turnovers and enforced errors by Ealing. This meant Fullers could keep Ealing on the back foot and good linking play from the backs kept the pressure on Ealing, this led to a penalty outside their 22, quick thinking by Jamie O'Keefe led to a cross field kick for Simon Lee to run in a try, to take the score to 12 - 0 to Fullers, however, an injury shortly after to Bill Calcraft with a broken wrist led to Fullers being reduced to 13 men and when a few minutes later an injury in the 2XV match led to Jamie O'Keefe being requested, Fullers were down to 12 men at half time.
After negotiations with Ealing, Fullers were able to borrow 2 players to be back to 14, however, now Ealing had the wind at their back and a change of position brought their scrum half to fly half and he straight away made use of the wind to push Fullers on the defensive, with Ealing now in the ascendancy, Fullers were being pushed back with the big Ealing forwards making inroads and the fly half controlling the game and seeing the gaps that there were due to Fullers only having 14 men, Ealing were soon able to build a 19 - 12 lead, however, Fullers still kept fighting, however,we lost another payer when Iain had to leave the field due to injury.
However, quick ball from the scum was fed to the backs just outside their own 22, where they were able to attack down the blind side and get the ball wide to Jason who outpaced the defence to score, unfortunately the kick was missed. Crackers was able to join Fullers to get us to 14 again, however, the work that we were doing to make up for the extra man was now starting to tell and gaps were appearing, however, last gasp defence by Steve Hunt, Simon Lee, Simon Groves and Kevin Sorkin kept Ealing at bay until a final converted try in the last minute, for Fullers to lose a competitive game 17 - 26. Best wishes go to Bill and Iain for a speedy recovery.
