FULLERIANS 1st XV 28 Eton Manor 38
Disastrous 10 minutes proves costly
London 1 North League
Well if there was ever a game where Fullerians snatched defeat from the jaws of victory then this was it. A terrible 10 minute spell in the second half where Eton Manor scored three tries proved to be decisive.
Fullerians did start well when centre Liam man was through but just held short of the line but one phase too many allowed Eton Manor to get their defensive line in shape and keep Fullers out.
Eton Manor’s quick back three got in behind Fullers and were rewarded with a converted try midway through the half. Fullers bounced back with two penalties by full back Tom Fawssett only for the visitors to score again though their other wing.
Fullers brought the score back to 11-12 after a catch and drive from the line out saw hooker Drew Horne crash over. Just before the break they had another penalty in front of the posts but they went for the corner instead of the three points. The kick unfortunately went out on the full and the chance to go into the lead went missing.
The second half started well for Fullers when James Maher caught the restart and immediately put the visitors under pressure. Fullers produced wave after wave and eventually they crashed over from short range with second row Liam Boyd crashing over.
They extended their lead further with another well struck penalty by Fawssett and were in complete control at 21-12 up with 20 minutes to play. Then wing Sam Tinsley was sent to the sinbin for a high tackle and Eton Manor capitalised on their numerical advantage to score in the corner.
To add salt to the wound they scored again after some poor kicking and tackling by Fullers. They added more tries when they stole a ball at the lineout which Fullers were convinced was offside as the maul had formed. The referee saw it another way so play continued and Fullers did not react to the referee quick enough and the Eton Manor player scored.
It was now 21-38 with 10 minutes to go and back to full numbers Fullers went back and scored after some good interplay up field with Jamie Molloy crashing over. Fullers were seeking that fourth try and bonus losing point in the dying moments. The earlier penalty chance in the first half came back to haunt them as they had another penalty far out with the last play of the game. They kicked for the corner instead and the lineout chance went missing as Eton Manor stole the ball to deny the home side any points on the day.
“We played very well at times and deserved something from the game but that mad 10 minutes in the second half cost us the game when we were in control. We sometimes lack those 1%s that can make massive differences in the game but we are learning and will continue to build during the season.” commented Fullerians Head Coach Rich Hoskins.
